Is having an extended (2 year plus) offseason where one get's kind of bloated, puffy, and "chubby" required in order to gain serious mass? Can a bodybuilder be lean year around and still gain serious size? And by serious size, I mean like going from an amateur to an IFBB Pro.

Perfect example I can think of in terms of look:

Yes it is. Look at the off-season pictures of the golden-era bodybuilders. Staying lean year-round is a recent trend with the whole teenage aesthetic/Zyzz movement.

Most of these pros are holding tons of water, not getting fat

Will you gain more eating in a surplus or just enough to maintain?

Such a hard question to ponder...

Yes you need the wet compounds to put on the real size!

You can eat in a surplus and still not be bloated and look like a watery mess. It's just how much of a surplus you eat at.

getting fat is just lazy.
You will gain the same amount of muscle tissue eating 300 cals over your maintenance as you will eating 3000, just without all the fat.

Training intensity builds muscle not calories.
Its all down to your genetics,

You need all 3 Jeff, excess food, drugs and intensity in the gym... If you don't push your self with all 3 youl stay the same size yr after year

Altho I'm not talking about being fat, more swollen...

well, there's the whole "growing in to the show" theory... But even then I'd think you'd need a couple of days to take the water bloat off. It's very  individual. But even guys that were in shape all year round, like shawn ray, had offsean bloat.

And then there's the trenbolona trenbologna cattle fuel that doesn't give bloat but on the olympia level you can't just do that solely.
