in 1976 the technology required for a fully remote controlled R2D2 was not there yet.  As time passed the technology got better, but Lucas kept him in they suit because he felt he gave the droid more personality.

Actually, this is incorrect.

There have always been two - a remote controlled R2-D2 and the one with Kenny inside.

When R2-D2 is using his third (middle) leg, that is the computer controlled one. When it is standing still, but makes noises and swivels its head, that is Kenny.

It has always been this way since the beginning.

Anyone remember the mockumentary R2-D2: Beneath the Dome? ???

It was made by Lucasfilm to coincide with the release of Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Clones in 2002.

It was hilarious. It tells Artoo’s life story as if he were real. ;D

It was only viewable at Starwars.com back then in three parts.

Eventually, it was sold on DVD.

I remember that you could get it for free if you bought Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith on DVD. I think the place that was giving some away with the purchase was either Sam Goody or The Wiz.

It was also sold at Best Buy for a time. You can still purchase it at Amazon and EBay.

I didn't know there was a DVD though.

Must buy.

Oh, and RIP, Kenny.

The weird thing about the DVD is that the price goes up and down.

I waited and got it pretty cheap off of EBay.
