Well I'm Dutch so against the dead penalty.
But I agree with a severe punisnment...I think a lotsa money may work fine.
And I mean really lotsa money. That's the only thing that might work.

For criminals money wouldn't be a determinant to stop crime. The amount wouldn't matter because if it were astronomical they'd never be able to repay it. You're applying the logic of a rational person, a murderer isn't going to be logical.
Large fines may lower drinking and driving and other "preventable" crimes but even in that case it's unlikely because the danger element of dd should be enough of a risk to avoid it.
Criminals aren't in a position to think logically like someone with a "secure and stable" life. They either value the reward to risk ratio, make drastic emotionally charged decisions or are sociopaths.
The punishments for violent crimes should be severe. Monetary fines aren't worth the paper that they are printed on.
