REPS, I never did personally meet Chris but shortly after he won the Universe someone threw a big afternoon pool party on his behalf which was held in the same apartment complex in which we were staying.

Soon after his win a few of us from Pearl's Gym in Pasadena drove down to the gym he either owned or managed on Santa Monica Blvd to offer our congratulations, but he was not there that day.

But the gym looked damn nice for that time period.

I don't think that there were any 'secrets' about Chris' lifestyle. It was just something that was not discussed and not as important  as it seems today.

As for Ken Sprague ... I did meet Ken and his wife on a few occasions when he owned Gold's in Santa Monica but the subject of his private life was never discussed. It just never seemed to be an important topic of conversation

I will say that Ken promoted the best national bodybuilding championships of all time. This was mentioned earlier and included a parade through town with bodybuilders on an elephant and other very unique stuff.

A high school 'symphony' orchestra played all the contenders' posing music and Mae West and Bert Goodrich presented the overall trophy to Dave Johns and the warm up area had the best gym equipment available at that time.

Ken even had a Mr America newspaper printed for the event.

Tim Fogerty, please correct me if I am incorrect with any of the above pertaining to that Ken Sprague sponsored national contest. Was it AAU at the time or was it NPC?

I think it was AAU because during the weigh in, Pete G. asked me to head back to his office and see if I could find his AAU (?) membership card.

And I think that was the last year that each contender had to sit through an interview.

I also had the opportunity to talk with Sprague while he was photographing various Gold Gym members for the Gold's Gym training 'book' he published.

If I am not mistaken he reserved the rights to publish Gold Gym books when he sold out and then moved up north to Seattle, Washington.

That was all a hell of a long time ago and no one that I knew discussed the types of activity that others were involved in.

I honestly had no idea about Joe Gold until just a few years back.

Back then that subject was actually not a matter of general interest as far as I can recall.

Or maybe is was just a matter of being polite ... which seems to have been abandoned in this day and age.

I think that the internet has changed a lot of us and those good old days will never be seen again.

Chivalry has been long gone ... and politeness passed away recently with the invention of the internet.

Or something like that.

Some things were best left unsaid. People didn't publicize their sex lives. On the other hand, more folks were "in the closet" because their lifestyles were illegal and frowned upon as in the Celluloid Closet. It's good that you see them as the good old days. However for some they weren't all that good. Stonewall riots.

REPS, I was backstage that night and while standing in the wings, I got a tap on my shoulder and turned around to se that it was Bert Goodrich who was requesting me to give way so that he could  escort Mae West on stage to present the trophy to Dave and she kind of looked my way as if to say, 'Thanks'.

I forget the exact details but I think she was suffering from bad eyesight and od age but as soon as she hit that spotlight she once again became the Mae West we all used to see on the silver screen.

She even ended her appearance with her famous "Come up and see me sometime!" line and needless to say ... the house went wild.

For many years following her death many people actually though she was a man in drag but I don't think that has ever been verified.

Never saw Sextette but a few friends were in that motion picture.

And a couple of individuals who turned out to be friends much later in my lifetime were members of her traveling night club act.

I think that the only motion picture I ever saw her in was the one with W.C. Fields called "My Little Chickadee".
....or something like that...

Thanks for the memories stuntmovie. That was an AAU contest, the 1977 AAU Mr. America. The NPC didn't start up until 1982. Here's some pics from that show.

stunt,

You always have such great stories.  What a thrill that must've been to have been there at that contest with Mae West.

You are 100% correct about My Little Chickadee.  Unfortunately the movie is not as good as it should've been and it's neither one of Field's or West's best work but still it's fun to see.  Maybe someday we could get together and watch Sextette.

As for your friends in Mae West's act, are any of your friends in this photo?  If so, they are wearing some cool shoes.

TIM FOGARTY, in regards to the Gold's Gym ownership after Joe sold it to Sprague there was another but forgotten individual who owned the gym prior to the time that it was purchased by Pete and Ed and two others whom none of you probably know or have ever heard of unless you saw The Hustle at Muscle Beach.

This "forgotten individuaL" was mentioned once in passing but I have forgotten those details and he only owned it for a very short time.

But don't count on me to be 100% accurate regarding that bit of detailed Gold's Gym historical ownership info.

But the interesting part of this long forgotten story is that Joe Gold, once he had sold it to Sprague or the 'forgotten individual', decided to open another gym and once again use his personal name for the new facility.

But somehow Sprague informed Joe that he cold not open another Gold's Gym because the rights to that name were passed on to the new buyer upon the sale.

I believe that a lawyer got involved and Joe eventually named his new place WORLD's Gym.

Ancient history here so I may be incorrect in some of the above .... or possibly even all of it.

But I think NOT!

Also, am I the only one still alive within the bodybuilding world who believes/knows that Joe had a small gym operation (Possibly a so=torage facility for his home made equipment back then, within a small area of what is now the beachfront Sand Castle Apartments about 100 yards south of the old and original Muscle Beach 'PIT'?

NATURAL O, I was involved in the decision to get the newly formed NPC to become associated with the IFBB, but I am totally lost when it comes to dates, but I do believe that that formal gathering was conducted on a Sunday morning after Gary Leonard won the national championships.

Tim might be able tholepin me out here but Bodybuilding was once under the AAU of the US and then we broke away to become the NPC and then we eventually joined up with Joe and Ben under some agreed upon stipulations which I mentioned a couple of years ago on this Board.

That was one hell of a robust and interesting gathering with most of the top people in the game taking part. I only wish I had recorded it.

Around 1970 Joe Gold sold it to Dave Saxe and Bud Danitz for $50,000, who sold it two years later to Ken Sprague. In the late 70s, Sprague sold it to Pet Grymkowski, Tim Kiber and Ed Connors.  In the late 90s it was sold to Brockway Moran, which bought back franchises and merged it with other gyms it acquired. In 2004 Gold's was sold to TRT Holdings for $150 million.

No, I didn't know all that, but am good with teh google.

Joe Gold did create World's Gym, which after his death was sold to Planet Fitness (I think).

The AAU/NPC rift is a bit more complicated.  AAU had complete control over bodybuilding contests in the US.  Appearing in an IFBB contest cost you your amateur status in the AAU and got you banned for life.  But in the late 70s, the Weiders actually promoted some AAU contests for a few years.

TIM, Thanks for the Gold’s Gym ownership info. I never did meet Mr Saxe or Mr Dantz, but I did know each of the other owners.

I assume that Joe sold to Saxe and Dantz (good name for a vaudeville act) when the gym was on Pacific Ave (or was it on the second floor  of the building towards the northern end of Venice)?

And Iabelieve that Sprague moved it to the 2nd Street Santa Monica location and converted the Pacific Ave location to his private residence.

Is this all posted somewhere on the net?

Another question … Wasn’t there some problem between Joe Gold and Arnold regarding ownership of Joe’s Venice location at one time?

Regarding the Weiders promoting an AAU event …. You may possibly be correct but I find that difficult to believe.

There was very strong animosity on just about every level back then which came to a robust conclusion when we had that official meeting at the Santa Monica Auditorium and became associated with the IFBB.

Even after that meeting the battle continued and took a few more years to subside.

At present I can only recall the names of two west coast individuals who were the responsible parties for the NPC/AAU breakaway, but there were many more.

(Ralph Countryman / Jerome Weise)

Can you correct anything or add anything to the above?

Thanks, Tim,

This topic should possibly have its own location
