Linux Turns 25 Today
« on: August 25, 2016, 06:34:03 PM »
On August 25, 1991, a Finnish computer science student named Linus Torvalds announced a new project. “I’m doing a (free) operating system,” he wrote on an Internet messaging system, insisting this would just be a hobby.

But it became something bigger. Much bigger. Today, that open source operating system—Linux—is one of the most important pieces of computer software in the world. Chances are, you use it every day. Linux runs every Android phone and tablet on Earth. And even if you’re on an iPhone or a Mac or a Windows machine, Linux is working behind the scenes, across the Internet, serving up most of the webpages you view and powering most of the apps you use. Facebook, Google, Pinterest, Wikipedia—it’s all running on Linux.

Plus, Linux is now finding its way onto televisions, thermostats, and even cars. As software creeps into practically every aspect of our lives, so does the OS designed by Linus Torvalds.

Yeah, the shitty Penguin kinda spoils it... oddly annoying humor these people have. Must be related to all the pony fetishes in the "IT crowd".
Linus was most likely high on anadrol when he "hacked" his way to infamy... he also used to work his midsection and lower back at Westside 7 days a week to endure the endless hours sitting in front of a computer.

And to top it off - he also filled in as a stunt double for Arnold in "Junior".

So he took UNIX and rebranded it as Linux and made it easier to port onto Intel Chips and run.  Yes, it's been big.  Same with java.  I never understood how someone just creates a new Language.  The time and effort and intelligence to do that is outworldy

Amazing what can be accomplished when focused on something other then GetBig and social media.  ;D

Do you think that with the popularity of social media that great inventions will decrease?  Some of those minds that are out there with ideas that can change the world are preoccupied with getting Likes and such?

The languages that are "created" are most likely to be held high in academic circles - their real life impact being minimal.

Every mac and iphone and android.

Technically Macs and iPhones are BSD, but every Android powered device sure. Including tablets.

semantics, Macs, iPhones and androids are unix derivatives
All Linus Torvalds did was just made the kernel

The real hero is Richard Stallman and the GNU project.

I think Stallman and Linus are both quite genius and have helped mankind quite a bit.

So Linus build the base and Stallman and Co. bulked up the project so that it is on par with UNIX?
Would there be any advantage using a commercial UNIX or is it an industry/niche thing?

Btw,
pretty sure Weider was watching his highly confidential video "footage" on W-UNIX on a Zercher4000.

At this point, I'd say it's very limited as to any advantage.

Back before Intel and AMD had large Core / CPU machines, and before there was high performing "network based" interconnects (like infiniband or even 100Gb ethernet) it was very advantageous to big number crunchers to use proprietary unices.

When you could attach 64 CPUs to a single platform and just do whatever you needed to do, you would get huge performance, but it cost huge amounts of dollars.

Today, you can do most of that with large Intel boxes and using interconnect services to achieve the same types of performance.

The days of Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX are "basically" over. Even those hardware companies have huge linux offerings and that is a big part of their business today.

I heard a number at a recent event that stated that 60% of all server hardware sold today runs Linux in some way shape or form.

Interesting - always wondered about that.
I was watching youtube videos and there were some dudes showing off "vintage" hardware, SGI stuff among them,  running UNIX/IRIX... pretty cool along with the alluring remains of NeXT's offerings.

Yes, and CRAY had a lot going on back then as well.

Linux, with the help of Intel and AMD has made those things almost pointless these days. Other things have of course happened to create that as well, but it's really very interesting.

The open-source communities have so many projects, it's really hard to keep up with them.
