So Linus build the base and Stallman and Co. bulked up the project so that it is on par with UNIX?
Would there be any advantage using a commercial UNIX or is it an industry/niche thing?
Btw,
pretty sure Weider was watching his highly confidential video "footage" on W-UNIX on a Zercher4000.
At this point, I'd say it's very limited as to any advantage.
Back before Intel and AMD had large Core / CPU machines, and before there was high performing "network based" interconnects (like infiniband or even 100Gb ethernet) it was very advantageous to big number crunchers to use proprietary unices.
When you could attach 64 CPUs to a single platform and just do whatever you needed to do, you would get huge performance, but it cost huge amounts of dollars.
Today, you can do most of that with large Intel boxes and using interconnect services to achieve the same types of performance.
The days of Solaris, HP-UX, and AIX are "basically" over. Even those hardware companies have huge linux offerings and that is a big part of their business today.
I heard a number at a recent event that stated that 60% of all server hardware sold today runs Linux in some way shape or form.
