Right but you see what I'm saying. Xenophobes failed to stop immigration and they were very unhappy with Ellis Island for processing immigrants. Today we're accusing people of xenophobia if they want immigrants processed instead of just wandering on in. It's not the same thing and basically amounts to name calling.
The bottom line is that pretty much the entire population of the third world wants to move to the first world. Since they're not all going to fit, we have to say no to some people, which means being able to say no - having a door that you can close.
Of course, that's not very nice. Especially since the US has often been responsible for things getting extra crappy in the same countries these people are trying to escape. And it's not very fair either, since some of us (everyone on this board) were just lucky at birth and got to live in a land of egregious overconsumption and comfort while a lot of the rest of the world suffers and dies. I think this could be solved and ought to be (and won't), but not by transplanting populations.
You have to be able to meet a guy and see what he's all about before you invite him in. There's not much of a case to make against that.
