This might have something to do with the fact that the event was held in Texas.

To a texan, sure is a word championship as long as it's held in Texas. Anyway, I doubt they flew in the spotters.

Most of them spotters don't even look like they have ever been in the gym.

Uncle Sam went to local disabled people house and hired spotters by promising them potatoes as compensation.

Painful to look at those twinks. Gay as can be.

I think having weak spotters is a good idea, it's more motivation for the lifter ffs

IPF care only about money, the kids they had spotting were probably just happy to be off school for the day.

Lol, they compete in Olympics, have professional trainers and training teams+facilities... heads of governments meet and greet them if they earn medals, governments give them cars, houses, land etc. when they win....

But yea, I rather be a bodybuilder  ::)

They don't.

Spotting: Didn't the other competitors or their trainers watch the event. I mean it takes a while to go they all the weight classes and all...
Awful, just awful.

[edit.] Re-read your post Mass243. Sorry, never mind 😀

An idiotic comment from someone who clearly doesn't understand the sport of powerlifting.

Spotting really isn't that hard. Even 900 is fine if the team knows what it is doing. Caught a wayward 400-Lb bar with only 2 skinny side spotters two weeks ago. Spotters just need to know where to be, and who to listen to.

At these IPF worlds it was so horrible, I watched a live stream of one weight class (men's 84 I believe) and switched it off before the squatting had even ended because the spotting was a disaster waiting to happen.

So yes, the IPF sucks. It should be disbanded for being the inept and corrupt organisation that it is. It's so bad I actually competed in a foreign country, just to not have to go to the IPF.

This was the IPF Worlds, a major event too. But that's what happens when you just accept any old body that's willing to volunteer. Spotting should be a paid or comped position at these meets. Also, the IPF should do away with the walk out from those type of racks, and let folks walk out from a Monolift or similar, where chain or strap safeties can be affixed.

why not use a power rack and if they fail it just hits the rack?

why not use a power rack and if they fail it just hits the rack?

Generally, the argument against that over the years was/is -

1) The rack interferes with judging, by blocking certain things.
2) The time it takes to adjust the racks for each lifter is prohibitive. Many of the larger meets can last the better part of a full day.
3) The smaller meet directors don't want to pay for new equipment. All new equipment has to be federation certified, and can add hundreds, perhaps reaching into the low thousands in new equipment costs so they don't want to pay it.
4) There is a faction of lifters that want the danger of lifting, so they argue that anything but spotters and those racks devalues the sport.

Even catch racks like Blaine Sumner uses would be a step in the right direction -
