What was the reason? Seems odd to win the big one and not even defend your title.

Dickerson had won every other major title there was to win. The Olympia was the only one left.

He almost quit after losing to Columbu in 1981. But, Bill Pearl convinced him to give it one more try. Dickerson did so and won it all.

Once he did that, he had nothing left to accomplish, much like older football players who have great careers but are missing a Super Bowl ring. Once that get it (i.e. Jerome Bettis, Michael Strahan), they call it a day so they can go out on top.

Yes I saw that but my big question was why he won in 82 and didn't compete in 83 to defend the title.

He was 43 in 1982 when he won, and remains the oldest person to have ever won a Mr. Olympia title.  Ronnie could have beaten that record by a couple of months had he shown up in 2007 as he looked in 2006.  It would have still arguably been a gift over Victor Martinez, but worse judging decisions have happened - such as Jay winning the Mr. Olympia in 2007 over Victor.

All the pics I've seen there's always a few guys way better than him.  He had a good back and calves, looked shit in any pose that involved him lifting his arms up.

As I understand it he did, then returned. Big thing being he didn't compete to defend his title in '83.

He retired, still had the itch to compete, returned in 1984, then retired again.

Then he returned briefly in 1990 and went away. Then one last time in 1994.

Interesting.  I think in that sense, you could say that Ronnie was the oldest person to hold the Mr. Olympia title.

The oldest person to win the Mr. Olympia title would still have been Dickerson though.

Ultimately it would depend on what way the record was worded.
