212 Weight Class
« on: October 10, 2016, 01:02:03 PM »
I never really paid much attention to the 212s until this past Olympia and I must say I was more impressed with some of them than the heavyweights. Now the physique class left me somewhat luke warm. I'm not "getting it" I suppose.

Right now just sets of 315 or thereabouts. Getting over an ac strain in my left shoulder and tennis elbow in my right forearm. When it rains it pours! ;D I've done north of 500 in the past.

I also believe in squats, military presses, barbell and dumbell rows, deadlifts.  What I found out the hard way is that incline bench presses are shoulder wreckers. In terms of building a chest I consider the Flat Bench Press to be king. Honorable mention to Flat Dumbbell Flyes. Incline anything is a tool of the devil.

inclines are fine for me, they boost both my flat bench and my shoulder press
Incline bench presses don't help Flat Bench Presses. Flat Bench Presses help Flat Bench Presses. Incline bench presses don't help Military Presses. Military Presses help Military Presses. Incline bench presses place shoulder joints in a completely vulnerable position, and wreck them. I know that sounds basic, and I can get into advanced physiology, but it would serve little purpose. Most gym members need to make the transition from "gym member" to "body builder". 80% of new muscle is acquired through two exercises: the Full Squat and the Flat Bench Press, both with free weights. Not hanmer strength this and body solid that. You wouldn't train for a marathon by driving an automobile so don't train for muscles in a machine either.

When I bench pressed on Saturday I warmed up with 135 then 225. I then did 3 work sets of 315, and a final set of 320. I would suggest that someone who speaks of  "your max" or suggests that personal records are static and permanent doesn't know much at all about the subject.

You think? It's actually light for me, because I am currently rehabbing 2 injuries. I will be getting cortisone injections early next week so I should be putting the pedal down again by November.
