I'm so lost when it comes to politics and the lingo associated with it.
  I do respect ppl that know, in depth at that, the very subject that defines us as a nation. Even ppl from across the pond have a strong understanding of our entire political system.

If you just went by popular vote, candidates would just spend time and money in highly populated areas. New York/Cali/Florida/Texas. All the "fly over" States would be left behind and forgotten. There would be no Senate either. It was established so less populated states had the same representation as the more populated ones.
