That's insane.  Most I've seen was 335 for a few, but his grip was more like shoulder width, not what I'd consider a true close grip.

My best ever was 315 for 5-6 and 365 for 2. My close grip is just to the outside of my massive pectorals. ;D

mine would be 8 inches apart. anything closer is going to cause proplems to the wrist joint over time.

Ouch! that would destroy the wrists in a very short time if you go heavy. anything inside 8" is a close grip bench. too close is only going to hurt your wrists and it doesn't help in any way for power in my opinion.

I have the grip so that the pinky fingers are just inside the knurling.

How does your close grip weight for reps compare with your regular bench?  In my case my close grip is about 88%, which is 275 lbs. for about 8 or so...

For some reason, I close-grip as much as I regular bench..

Why is this? Strong triceps?

Do you use a bench shirt?

Apparently then you could stand to build some strength off the chest to up your overall number. Deep-stretch dumbbell presses and cambered barbell presses can help, but this could be an oversimplification having not seen your form.

The funny thing is though that on regular grip, i fail midway up, so I dont feel I'm weak off the chest..

Weak off the chest doesn't necessarily mean failing at the chest. Weak off the chest can materialize as not generating enough power from that bottom position, and thus not being able to drive through that sticking point.

Most I've ever seen close gripped was 3 plates a side for 6, guy is massive. He put up 405 this past year on Military Press.  :o
