2016 IPL World Championships
« on: November 18, 2016, 10:27:20 PM »
Greetings to all. Last weekend (November 10-13) the International Powerlifting League (IPL) had their World Championships in Las Vegas. Luckily for me they also have the Masters divisions aka Old & Busted division. Did my best to make all my fellow Getbig aristocrats proud. Finished in 1st place in the Men's 55-59 age group, 242 pound (110kg) weight class. My squat, bench press, deadlift and total were all Masters World Records. A huge "Thank you" to Wiggs who showed up and helped me out. Here's a couple of pictures.

Yes, I know I'm fat. I'm a fucking powerlifter not a bodybuilder. Thank you. Yes, I know I'm pretty much bald. I'm 55 years old and I have taken a boatload of gear for years. Thank you. Yes, I know I am very handsome and should be a male model.

All my best to everyone. Sincerely.

25kg most probably. Same color code as Olympic plates.

Looks like a 245kg squat, a 280kg deadlift and around a 160kg bench. How close am I Tom?

That looks right, bench is tough, cause you can't see the change plates. This is that set to give you an idea of of the plate diameters -

.

Not a bad total at all.

Shit, TOMMY!! And your too, WIGGS!

I had no idea that was happening here in town!

But first of all "Congratulations on your records, TOMMY!

Until I retired, I was involved with Powerlifting since it was called Odd Lifting. Named  after some of us old Odd type characters, I think!

In fact the very beginning of POWERLIFTING USA which was published by Mike Lambert before he retired .... was a small 'rag' that we both worked on for a very short time which included anything which involved lifting heavy stuff.

After Miike graduated he made that magazine one of the finest (if not the only) powerlifting publication in existence.

The record keeping alone was a humongous job of tabulations.

Anyway ... I are stupid nowadays and had NO idea that your event was going to be held  here in LV. I would have been there with 'flying colors' and did my best to support ya, but I'm gad that Wiggs showed up.

PS... Did you ever meet Gus Rethwisch?

Congrats again, Tommy!

I really appreciate all the nice words. Thank you very much.

My lifts in pounds were-

Squat 540... That was my 3rd and final attempt.
Bench Press 319... That was my 3rd and final attempt
Deadlift 600... That was my opening attempt. Jumped to 644 on my 2nd attempt which should have been doable but missed. I passed my 3rd attempt.

Total 1459.

I have had total rotator cuff reconstruction surgery THREE times in the last four (4) years so my shoulders are extremely "fragile", thus the very marginal bench press. Was happy with the squat. Could have done better in the DL... but was still OK with my 600 pull.

I competed in the "Classic Raw" division. Knee sleeves are allowed but no knee wraps. No super suit. No bench shirt of any type. The IPL is not drug tested. The IPF is (supposedly) drug tested. I compete in the USPA & IPL.

I wish everyone the best with their training.

Great lifts Tommy! Was going to ask you about your rather narrow and very tucked bench, but then I read about your shoulder problems. I empathise with you, brother. Just keep doing what can be done, and have fun doing it.

Hi guys- There were a few questions.. so here come a few answers...

-Stunt, I had never met Gus prior to last weekend in Vegas. He is a legend in the sport and it was a real thrill to meet him. Many great stories were exchanged!

-As concluded, my close hand spacing and "tucked" position on the bench press is an attempt to save my shoulders. I train at Super Training Gym with Mark Bell and that technique is what we came up with. When I bench press, I try to "protect my armpits". The thumbless grip allows me to rotate my hands inward while trying to keep my elbows tucked in. Right now my shoulders are pain free, just fragile.

-My all time PR's in competition took place a long long time ago.

Squat... 766
Bench... 551
Dead....  755
Total... 2,072

At a bodyweight of 272, while competing in the 275 pound class. USPF raw. A long time ago.

Bodybuilding or powerlifting... you guys keep training hard and get on stage or on the lifting platform!
