They brought up some good questions, like "How is Santa Clause connected to the birth of Jesus Christ."

Not everything needs to be connected to Jesus Christ you know.

I don't want to come across as racist but it really is stunning to think there is whole continent of people who are not able to build roads, houses... not even talking about anything more sophisticated.

Pretty crazy isn't it? The Western "franchise" really is the best way, followed by the far eastern way. But, once you plug them in here, the subsequent generations pic it up.

Despite all the racism on getbig I assume many of us are interested in other cultures and our differences. Interesting and short video on culture shock for Sudanese refugees.

Very interesting.  Thanks for posting it.

Not the whole continent is not able to build roads, houses...etc. Below is Lagos in Nigeria, Wiggs' mother land.

The crime rate and murder rate is very high in Nigeria.

their minds seem to be so unpolluted. it's really interesting to get such an opinion on our culture and things we are used to and do not even think about. to them lots of our usual stuff and ways seems pretty much unexplainable. that's awesome

But also notice how they were stunned to discover a country where two people walking down a street alone do not speak to each other or where interacting with a stranger is taboo.

That's the first thing a person from another culture will notice, it seems.  How completely strange it is to pass someone on the street or whatever, and to have no acknowledgement take place.  They really can't believe it.  It almost freaks them out to think that's the way it is.

I'm from the South and on a recent trip to California I noticed this. I smiled at people, opened doors and said hello and they all looked at me like an idiot.

I'm curious about the psychological aspect of it.  Maybe they see it as a sign of weakness, for instance, to thank someone for the act of opening the door.

Or perhaps they view it as an attempt to extort by trying to "cause" them to say a thanks.

Or return a smile.

Seriously sick, twisted thinking.
