The great deal maker just got bent over by Carrier

Quote
We need a president who can stand up to big corporations, not fold to their demands.
By Bernie Sanders December 1 at 6:00 AM

Today, about 1,000 Carrier workers and their families should be rejoicing. But the rest of our nation’s workers should be very nervous.

President-elect Donald Trump will reportedly announce a deal with United Technologies, the corporation that owns Carrier, that keeps less than 1,000 of the 2,100 jobs in America that were previously scheduled to be transferred to Mexico. Let’s be clear: It is not good enough to save some of these jobs. Trump made a promise that he would save all of these jobs, and we cannot rest until an ironclad contract is signed to ensure that all of these workers are able to continue working in Indiana without having their pay or benefits slashed.

In exchange for allowing United Technologies to continue to offshore more than 1,000 jobs, Trump will reportedly give the company tax and regulatory favors that the corporation has sought. Just a short few months ago, Trump was pledging to force United Technologies to “pay a damn tax.” He was insisting on very steep tariffs for companies like Carrier that left the United States and wanted to sell their foreign-made products back in the United States. Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! How’s that for standing up to corporate greed? How’s that for punishing corporations that shut down in the United States and move abroad?

In essence, United Technologies took Trump hostage and won. And that should send a shock wave of fear through all workers across the country.

Trump has endangered the jobs of workers who were previously safe in the United States. Why? Because he has signaled to every corporation in America that they can threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for business-friendly tax benefits and incentives. Even corporations that weren’t thinking of offshoring jobs will most probably be reevaluating their stance this morning. And who would pay for the high cost for tax cuts that go to the richest businessmen in America? The working class of America.

Let’s be clear. United Technologies is not going broke. Last year, it made a profit of $7.6 billion and received more than $6 billion in defense contracts. It has also received more than $50 million from the Export-Import Bank and very generous tax breaks. In 2014, United Technologies gave its former chief executive Louis Chenevert a golden parachute worth more than $172 million. Last year, the company’s five highest-paid executives made more than $50 million. The firm also spent $12 billion to inflate its stock price instead of using that money to invest in new plants and workers.

Does that sound like a company that deserves more corporate welfare from our government? Trump’s Band-Aid solution is only making the problem of wealth inequality in America even worse.

I said I would work with Trump if he was serious about the promises he made to members of the working class. But after running a campaign pledging to be tough on corporate America, Trump has hypocritically decided to do the exact opposite. He wants to treat corporate irresponsibility with kid gloves. The problem with our rigged economy is not that our policies have been too tough on corporations; it’s that we haven’t been tough enough.

If Donald Trump won’t stand up for America’s working class, we must
.

Yeah, let's take business pointers from a socialist. News flash...just about the only production jobs left here to offshore are the last of them. The ones that are limited by freight costs like cars....appliances....an d furnaces and air conditioners....that's due to NAFTA.

Bernie couldn't even control the mic when two women wanted to take it over at a speech. He ran off at a rally when a native american started spitting truth. Bernie couldn't even blow the whistle on Clinton throwing his campaign under the bus due to his non-compete agreement. Who is he being strong for now? Nobody. Words. Talk. He wants the govt to control all means of production and hand out what's left to workers. It's not a better system.

He needs to enjoy the view from that beach house the Clintons bought him. Lame old cuck. Bernie had 30 years to do something. Let Trump at least try to do something effective.

try actually refuting anything that Bernie said in that article

Trump said he was going to be tough on corporations who sent jobs out of the country and yet when it came time for him to show us his amazing "deal making" skills Trump asked how far he should bend over .....and Carrier is still going to send ~ 800 jobs out of  the country even with this deal.

Or you can look at it like this, as Trump as said before and it is known, that American corporations are taxed like hell. By giving incentives" to keep jobs here, he got what he wanted.
Think of it when car dealerships give incentives for you to buy cars, or the government gives incentives to buy EVs, is that them bending over?

They were previously offered the exact same tax breaks and didn't take it

Trump had to give them even more corporate welfare and this is a company that is making a shit ton of money already

What happened to the "consequences" Trump said he was going to dish out to companies who shipped jobs out of the country...and Carrier is still sending almost half of those jobs out of the country.

What are the consequences for those lost jobs?

You actually believed him about "consequences"? One of the tenets of The Art of The Deal is "get the word out". Make a big statement, outlandish, etc...

Here is an informative round table discussion on Donald's book on C-Span. This was back in June 2016. They break it down. Instead of the passive-aggressive swipes about his negotiating ( and con artist) skills, get to know them.

so basically to lie?

They just copied that from Putin.

But Putin said that USA is a great power and not some banana republic whose elections Russia could in any way influence.

I mean he took obamas tact of making empty promises and used it just like he did.

Remember the promise to go line by line through the budget? Remember shovel ready projects? remember you can keep your doctor?

Bernie Sanders, the Socialist dreamer who has never had a job in his life, giving his opinion on a deal that a multi-millionaire (possibly billionaire) businessman on how NOT to conduct a business deal.

P.S. - Strawman, where were these scathing op-eds the past 8 years when numerous corporations left the country under Obama's watch, resulting in the loss of thousand upon thousands American working class job?

Bernie Sanders, man for the working class... only when it is beneficial to the Democrat party or his pocket books.

horse shit

when he lied I called him a liar, such as when he said if you like your insurance you can keep it

Trump, of course lies on a daily basis, in writing...all day long

The Carrier deal is just one example.

Carrier is still sending 1300 jobs to Mexico Trump punished them for doing so by giving them 7 million in tax breaks

  • It’s all a fraud
The truth of the matter is that it is not realistic or desirable for everything that Americans consume to be made in America.

That said, you want to create the most favorable possible climate via low taxation and regulation so that companies are not incentivized to leave the country in the first place. Like myself, Trump lives in New York state where taxes and regulation have done nothing but punish businesses via taxation and have driven them to other states.

Leftists inherently hate business and want to see it nationalized so the idea that a leftist could be business friendly is an oxymoron.
