There's so much great tech coming out in the next couple of years.  What are you looking forward to?

I'll start with the AMD RYZEN.  AMD hasn't produced chips as fast as Intel for years.  AMD's upcoming 8 core 16 thread beast. This chip, the sr7, will have the same performance as an I7 6900K but half the price , yep $499. They will have a 4 core 8 thread sku, sr3 which will have the same performance as the I7 6700 but for $149.

Demo of RYZEN VS I7 6900K

RYZEN will be a family of processors including servers, desktop, and laptops.  It's good to see AMD finally giving Intel some competition.

Vince already has two versions of the machine:

1989 Version

2012 Version

2027 Version-To Be Determined

Qualcomm will begin offering a 48 core ARM server chip using 10 nm fabrication technology named the Centriq 2400.  Why is this important?  First Intel has a whopping ninety-five percent of the server market, basically ninety-five percent of the internet is run on Intel.  It's pretty close to a monopoly.  Second, fifty percent of Intel's profits come from servers so it's an important market for them.

Previously ARM server chips didn't have the horsepower to compete with Intel in servers and were just too slow.  Think an Iphone vs an Intel I7 desktop.  Not even close.

Up until now Intel has ALWAYS been in the lead in fabrication technology offering the smallest transistor size.  Transistor size is everything in chips.  It's what drives Moore's law and the rest of technology innovation.  However, due to Samsung and TSMC's success in cell phone chips they've been able to leap frog Intel and have transitioned to the 10 nm node while Intel's still stuck on 14 nm.  This is HUGE.

Qualcomm has had great success in cell phones too.  As a result they have a Ninety billion dollar market cap and tons of financial resources to take on Intel in the profitable server market.

Facebook and Google are very interested in ARM server chips due to their lower cost and power consumption, but they just haven't been fast enough.

It's going to be interesting to see how all this plays out.

You're right, that is a beast of a laptop.  It has a Intel i7-6700HQ which will be comparable to the RYZEN sr3 with 4 cores.  What really makes your laptop a beast is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M graphics card.

I like AMD and until recently used them exclusively for my home PCs but my laptop with the 6th gen FX is noticeably slower than my 6th gen i7 laptop.  I don't do anything serious on either one but power is still appreciated.

And there will still be lag, lousy network speed, and shitty hardware to go along with it.

Like I said, it's been a long time since AMD was competitive to Intel.  Even the Intel fans want AMD to do well because it means Intel can't charge whatever they want.  There are Intel chips that were launched four or five years ago that are still selling at the same price.  The RYZEN is the first real competition to Intel.  Right now Intel basically has a monopoly.

Amazon Looks to Develop an Uber-Like App for Booking Truck Freight
E-commerce giant trying to compete in the $150 billion business of booking transportation

Amazon.com Inc. may be developing mobile technology so it can schedule and track truck shipments of its products with a few taps or clicks—the next step in the e-commerce giant’s bid to become its own global freight broker and compete with companies in the $150 billion business of booking transportation.

Sources familiar with Amazon’s business said the company may be looking to acquire or build an application capable of matching available trucks to shipments, for instance, from a seaport hub to a distribution center or from a warehouse to a parcel-delivery facility. The news was first reported by Business Insider.

Analysts said if the service works for Amazon, the company’s next step could be to make it available for a fee to non-Amazon shippers as an easy-to-use option for business-to-business freight shipping.

AMD Vega 10, Vega 20, and Vega 11 GPUs Detailed
by btarunr Tuesday, September 20th

AMD will begin the "Vega" architecture lineup with the Vega 10, an upper-performance segment part designed to disrupt NVIDIA's high-end lineup, with a performance positioning somewhere between the GP104 and GP102. This chip is expected to be endowed with 4,096 stream processors, with up to 24 TFLOP/s 16-bit (half-precision) floating point performance. It will feature 8-16 GB of HBM2 memory with up to 512 GB/s memory bandwidth. AMD is looking at typical board power (TBP) ratings around 225W.

For almost half the price the Vega 10 performs at 12.5 TFLOPS compared to the Nvidia Titan X at 11 TFLOPS.

The Ryzen processor and Vega GPU will be in the next XBox project scorpio and here's the proof.

Seriously, when this processor and GPU get launched in the next consoles from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, people are going to be blown away by the jump in performance.
