Race, culture and the rise of Trump
« on: December 19, 2016, 08:36:10 AM »
Black lives Matter movement and unfettered illegal immigration were the main reasons for Trump's rise to the POTUS.

People that think it's merely racism or jobs don't fully understand this new movement.
When Micheal Brown was shot and killed by officer Wilson in Ferguson, Ms, it was game on.
What helped promote Black Lives Matter was when Pres. Obama sent  Atty gen Holder to investigate.

The default setting of many democrats was to question the judgment of police.
When asked, from the POTUS on down, dems sided with street thugs over the police.

I was raised to respect police and always cooperate with them.
Many middle class whites saw this BLM protest and become upset.
It was perceived by them as  special consideration for inner city blacks.
Call it what you will, but it pissed off a lot of rural white folks.

Combine that outrage with the Islamic terror attacks in Paris and elsewhere.
Pres. Obama's "contain ISIS" policy may have some wisdom, but it looked weak.
Obama and Hillary appeared to be as concerned with the Islamists as they were
hard, working Christian  Americans.

Trump also tapped into a desire to bring back good paying, WORK as a means to get ahead.
I remember seeing Trump campaigning in W. Va with a bunch of miners.
He told them, that there was nothing wrong with mining coal.
If he was elected he'd promote the coal industry right here in America.
No man who's worked in the same job for 10 or more years ,wants to be retrained for something else.

My concerns  with Trump was  more about his apparent lack of diplomacy and foreign policy experience.
Most of his supporters seemed to prefer his gruff direct style.
They relate to that and were thrilled to hear a wealthy NY real estate tycoon , voice THEIR concerns in a style they identified with .

That's easy to say for those who hated Hillary.

My OP is about how Trump tapped into a big swath of voters in rural America.
Hillary rarely even went to where they lived.

To be fair, the national polls showed she'd win the popular vote.
That was from largely urban , metro areas and didn't figure in the increase in white rural voters.
BUT, the pundits and election "experts" failed to see what drove the avg Trump voter.
I live in North Ga and trust me, I was very aware of Trump's appeal and why they hated Hillary.

I think the country never ralized how bad white America is doing....It was always assumed that they were ok and doing well and thats why they were ignored.....The illegal immigration is an issue but the amount of people coming across the border is exaggerated......there are more people coming here on airplanes and NOT LEAVING or visiting here and entering into fake marriages than there are Mexicans coming across the border

Lol what are you basing the idea that more illegal immigrants are coming over via airplanes and visas rather than across our southern border?

Can't speak for the rest of the US, but here in S Florida that is a real problem.  Mostly with Brazilians and Italians.  Coming over, paying (or fooling) some girl (or guy) into marrying them and then waiting for the ink on their green card to dry before using the same pen to sign their divorce papers.  A huge number simply show up by airplane and just don't leave.

Cubans are a different story though.  They will rat each other out if they are here illegally.  Not sure what kind of mentality that is, but that is where the nickname "Miami Whites" comes from when other Cubans are describing the ones here legally.

Would love to see numbers for Florida too, I'd be amazed if that were true.

If we're comparing personal experiences I live in Houston and would say that the vast majority of illegal immigrants didn't come via a work visa or marriage license.

Yeah... it's true.

In your experience (and location) you can expect greater numbers to come across seeing how we border another country.  In FL, we don't border anything and the numbers of Cubans making illegal landings are quite low.  You would be surprised at the number of Italians and Brazilians that show up and marry some of the opposite sex and yet are homosexuals themselves.  I guess the Immigration office doesn't cross reference or check sites like Gayday.com, Match.com, Squirt, Grindr, etc...  You will see a guy that looks like a model walking around with a huge fat wife (usually trailing three steps behind him).  But yet an older man right next to him.  Doesn't take much to figure out that scenario.  Especially with Ft Lauderdale being the gay Older/Young capital of the world.

Maybe the "great wall" could be extended around Florida as a sea wall. "Italians have been immigrating to the U.S. since 1890. Between 1900 and 1915, 3 million Italians immigrated to America, which was the largest nationality of “new immigrants.”

An interesting feature of Italian immigrants to the United States between 1901 and 1920 was the high percentage that returned to Italy after they had earned money in the United States. About 50% of Italians repatriated, which meant that often times the immigrants did not care about learning English or assimilating into American society because they new that they would not remain in America permanently." https://www.mtholyoke.edu/~molna22a/classweb/politics/Italianhistory.html

I believe way more Germans came here than Italians. And that's if you don't count all of the Anglo Saxon folks.

Cubans have also been immigrating to the U.S. for a long time. Thousands of Cuban settlers immigrated to Louisiana between 1778 and 1802 and Texas during the period of Spanish rule. Since 1820 the Cuban presence was more than 1000 people. In 1870 the number of Cuban immigrants increased to almost 12,000, of which about 4,500 resided in New York City, about 3,000 in New Orleans, and 2,000 in Key West. The causes of these movements were both economic and political, which intensified after 1860, when political factors played the predominant role in emigration, as a result of deteriorating relations with the Spanish metropolis.

After the Cuban revolution led by Fidel Castro in 1959, a Cuban exodus began as the new government allied itself with the Soviet Union and began to introduce communism. From 1960 to 1979, hundreds of thousands of Cubans left Cuba and began a new life in the United States. Most Cuban Americans that arrived in the United States initially came from Cuba's educated upper and middle classes.

According to a U.S. Census 1970 report, Cuban Americans as well as Latinos lived in all 50 states. But as later Census reports demonstrated, the majority of Cuban immigrants settled in south Florida.

Most German immigration to the United States occurred during the nineteenth century, but Germans began arriving as early as 1608, when they helped English settlers found Jamestown, Virginia.

Despite early twentieth century anti-German movements, many traces of German culture have survived into the twenty-first century. These can be seen in product names such as Bayer, Heinz, Chrysler, Busch, and Budweiser, and in such now thoroughly American items of cuisine as hot dogs (frankfurters) and pretzels. http://immigrationtounitedstates.org/519-german-immigrants.html

The first Brazilians to enter what is now the United States may have been a group of Sephardic Jews who arrived in 1654. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, approximately one million Brazilians lived in the United States. However, that figure is merely an estimate because as many as one-third of the Brazilian immigrants enter the United States without documentation to evade quota restrictions. http://immigrationtounitedstates.org/391-brazilian-immigrants.html

The Great Wall of China actually does go into the sea.  They had the right idea it seems.   :D

Many of my Irish ancestors ( mom's side of the family) didn't have the best societal image over 100 years ago.
The slang term "paddy wagon" came from the vast number of drunk and disorderly Irishmen from NYC and Boston in the 1800's.
As in ; "I've got paddy locked up again for drunken brawling"   aka paddy = Irish .
