you got a tv a dvd recorder and want to record something from the tv via the dvd recorder to a dvd? you would need special dvd-r discs then you would either press record in real time or use some kinda menu programming for a show on a later date.
you may need to have the tv-channel set on the dvd-recorder too (otherwise the show on the tv might not correspond to the show set on the dvd recorder so you end up recording a different channel)
