Look what happened to James Toney (another Boxer), that had no takedown-defence whatsoever.

Just take him down and submit.

james toney was shot, wasn't a puncher or an explosive phenom like tyson. Plus he was a blown up middleweight manlet.

Tyson, Lewis, Bowe etc would make mincemeat of the ufc heavyweight division.

Plus haye, holyfield and other smaller heavyweights would clean out the ufc 205 division.

Only Boxing is not enough.

We are talking a 38 year old James Toney who was already wrecked. To conclude that boxers will suck at MMA is a bit of  a stretch don't you think.

Only Boxing is not enough when your opponent can kick and take you down and grapple.

Yes that's what I would do as well.
If I was fighting Tyson, I would just get in striking distance and easily take him down.

Or you could look at Ray Mercer who KO'd Tim Sylvia...there is always a punchers chance.  That said of course he would need to train outside of boxing to be effective.

He doesn't have the chin to take a solid blow.  A Vitor Belfort in his prime would clock him and put him on his ass fairly quickly.

tyson would have to learn take down and submission defence , granted no one hits like him , in the ufc

but he would be taken down very easily and pounded out with no wrestling or submission defence, dont live in fantasy land.

Ever see a Tyson uppercut?

You going to shoot for the legs with Mike Tyson wearing 4 ounce MMA gloves?

Good luck with that

walter of course i did ive been watching boxing for over 30 years , just because he was a great puncher does not translate that he will be a great mma fighter.

Okay, then you know enough that one or two bodyshots from Tyson wearing MMA gloves would TKO almost anyone.

A prime Tyson was a devastatingly accurate punched with excellent defense.

i dont think an uppercut is that meaningful in ufc. i cant remember anybody ever been knocked by a uppercut in mma from the top of my head.
plus there's other ways to get someone to the ground.

Ok. Tyson, in his book Undisputed, says he couldn't do MMA.

From those old heavyweights I'd still say that Tyson would be most adapt to transfer.
D'amato trained him as good as he new and still, right after he passed, Tyson reverted back to being more of a fighter than boxer.

Maybe Ronda could fight Tyson?

Everyone knows the answer to OPs question.  The real question is if David Tua would have had a chance against Tyson.  I think he would've. Shame they never fought.

also , benard hopkins said it would be harder to throw ko punches in mma, because your constantly have to defend getting taken down and not being able to plant your feet

to throw punches your used to throwing

Tyson would have to learn some basic takedown defense. Toney is nowhere near a good comparison to Tyson, as he is a totally different style of fighter and far smaller naturally. Tyson with 4oz gloves doesn't even have to connect squarely, he would KO guys with glancing blows in the UFC.

In the early UFC he would gave accumulated some KO highlights, but would have lost against some smart wrestlers and BJJ.

any boxer beyond UFC early days, loses easily. A black BJJ is simply gona stand outside the reach and go for a take down when the moment is right and boxers have zero chance of getting out of it and get submitted or ground n pounded.
