Scared? No.

Just a realization that a shooting can happen any place, any time.

None of us are really safe. Anything can fall apart at any time. I am not too sure this represents fear, or just shatters the realization of the "Absolutism of Life."

Good point.

Shooting, high jacked air plane, drunk driver, hurricane, electrical fire..... life is fragile and it doesnt take much to end it. You can "prepare" for a gunman (and no prepped citizen has ever taken one out) but a heart attack can come out of nowhere .

Life is unpredictable

Bullshit. We're all safe.  This is one big ass country.  Something happens in Florida and by the magic of the internet people in Michigan feel the effects like it's close to them but reality is it's thousands of miles away in an isolated place.

We are ALL safe?  Safe is a relative term. Tell the 8 year old in the Southside of Chicago that he is safe. I doubt he would agree with you and I would not consider him safe.

But, of course, many of us are safe to a CERTAIN extent. I don't like to think that I am absolutely safe. I am somewhat more safer compared to most others--safety is more about a continuum rather than being "safe or not safe." (too dichotomous).

Good point, we can't live in fear though. All can can do is be ready. But fuck how can I be ready when I'm chasing a three year old everywhere I go

I don't live in fear. I go wherever I want to in the USA or my neighborhood. Granted, I won't be traveling to the Middle East any time soon.

But I think its poor thinking to buoy ourselves with the Absolutism of Life. As Ernest Becker said, "To live fully is to live with an awareness of the rumble of terror that underlies everything."

As Lear (2006) puts it: We live at a time of a heightened sense that civilizations are themselves vulnerable. Events around the world . . . have left us with an uncanny sense of menace. We seem to be aware of a shared vulnerability that we cannot quite name. . .. It is [an existential] vulnerability that we all share in virtue of being human. (pp. 7–8)

This has zero to do with "living in fear" or being afraid or fearful. Its an existential realization.

From the article, "Identity and resurrective ideology in an age of trauma."

The key that for me unlocked the meaning of emotional trauma was what I came to call the absolutisms of everyday life:

When a person says to a friend, “I’ll see you later” or a parent says to a child at bedtime, “I’ll see you in the morning,” these are statements whose validity is not open for discussion. Such absolutisms are the basis for a kind of naive realism and optimism that allow one to function in the world, experienced as stable and predictable. It is in the essence of emotional trauma that it shatters these absolutisms, a catastrophic loss of innocence that permanently alters one’s sense of being-in-the-world. Massive deconstruction of the absolutisms of everyday life exposes the inescapable contingency of existence on a universe that is random and unpredictable and in which no safety or continuity of being can be assured. (Stolorow, 2007, p. 16)

I'm more surprised people are still watching CNN to catch this.  I guess they didn't learn from the election. Clueless!

So, the guy flies in from another location, gets his checked luggage out of baggage claim, removes gun from luggage and starts shooting people in baggage claim area.  The logistics of this seems strange.  Why even bother buying an airline ticket?  If he just wanted to shoot random people, he could have done the same thing by simply pulling up in his car, walking in, and start blasting away.  Don't see the point as to why he had to through all these unnecessary steps just to shoot random strangers in an airport baggage area.

my thoughts exactly.  why bother?

More guns!, not less.

This wouldn't have happened if we doubled the gun ownership rates!

Shooting at yet another "gun free" free fire zone.  Gun free zones are death traps.

Typical scared american thinking.  I bet you all airports all of a sudden deployed arm guards with machine guns because of their fear.

Agreed.  We're a nation of fucking pussies!

No I meant they literally jacked the plane while it was high in the air. High as in 30,000 feet.

LOL. Good catch. I'm an idiot.

I use to watch both CNN and Fox to get different opinions. CNN is way to fake for me to watch anymore.

Update:  Shooter claims voices told him to do it.

His aunt said he came back different and acting weird from active duty.  Must have flipped out.
