Is Deontay Wilder a big thing in the USA?
« on: January 18, 2017, 05:21:14 AM »
I know MMA is taking over but I don't think the take over will be complete for a while yet so just wondered if Wilder is a big deal in the USA? Obviously he wont be on the scale of Tyson or even Holyfiield and Bowe. Do people talk about him? Is he on talk shows?  Like in the UK Anthony Joshua is a big star, all over tv and magazines and shit.

He isn't really that well known outside of boxing fans and people in Alabama. I am a big boxing fan myself, but I would bet that if I asked ten random people at work, none of them would have heard of him. Also, most boxing fans in the US that I've heard talk about Wilder mostly think he is overrated, or at least untested for the most part. Now, take one of the top 10 NFL players, and the majority of people will know who they are....boxing just isn't that popular among the mainstream in the US now. It is all about football now...I am a fan of both, but I wish boxing would make a comeback in terms of popularity.

I was also going to add that a lot of US boxing fans seem to really like Anthony Joshua, at least the majority of people I've talked to. Wilder seems to get a lot of hate for some reason, but I like him myself. I would like to see him take a step up in terms of his opposition though.

This - it is hard to judge how good he is.
As you say he needs to up the level of opponents.

Some general sports writers like him because he's a nice guy, and fun to deal with. In boxing circles, he's considered untested, and questionably skilled compared to other heavyweights that have come down the pike. Right now, Lou Ortiz, and the stable of British Heavies, particularly Joshua are creating much more of a stir in US boxing circles than Wilder.

As mentioned above.

Edit -

I actually think Shannon Briggs would be a bigger, more exciting draw here in the States than Wilder.

I honestly think more people know him from this -

.

than his boxing prowess.

no he is not, boxing is dying in the u.s  and not doing very well at all,  they dont even get very good ratings on h.b.o or showtime

in fact h.b.o has slashed there boxing budget to about 20 million per year,  at one time they were spending 80 million a year.

deontay hasnt fought anyone good, he is content fighting cans on showtime

The problem with boxing in the last few years is the best fighter avoiding each other and fighting bums while holding one of the many belts for each weight..

Wilder is prime example, 30 odd fights, only 50/50 fight he's had is against stivern

AJ is fighting Klitchko in his 18th fight just to compare...

x2 boxing is completely screwed up right now.  Way too many belts, too many weight classes, top guys fighting only once a year, top guys avoiding fights out of fear of having a loss...I could go on.  Wilder is really a sorry excuse for a champ.  He's a poster boy for what's wrong with boxing.  He should be screaming for fights with Joshua, Klitschko, Fury, Parker, Browne.  He will never fight Povetkin, he already made that clear.

Without some takedown defense, I don't see boxers doing well against MMA fighters.  They just lack the arsenal to enter into such a competition.

In a real fight, I couldn't see Floyd Mayweather lasting longer than a minute or so against Conor McGregor for example.

From what I hear, Wilder will fight Joseph Parker after their next fights

That's a good fight.  I give the slightest of edge to Wilder.  I think he'll be able to hurt Parker at some point and possibly force a stoppage.
Also, Wilder will fight with more composure because he knows Parker aint no joke.  Wilder is trained by Mark Breland who was a tall, rangy welterweight
much like Wilder is a tall, rangy heavyweight.  Breland is one of if not the best US Olympic boxers of all time.

My current assessment of the heavies:

1. Tyson Fury
2. Wlad Kliltchko
3. Anthony Joshua
4. Alexander Povetkin
5. Luis Ortiz
6. Deontay Wilder
7. Joseph Parker
8. Andy Ruiz
9. Kubrat Pulev
10.Bryan Jennings

By the end of the year, I predict Fury will be out due to inactivity.  Klitchko will be retired by Anthony Joshua.  Povetkin will fail another drug test and be irrelevant.
Wilder will get by Joseph Parker but get clipped by Luis Ortiz.

The biggest fight to be made next year will be a unification between Ortiz and Joshua!

Id rate them

Wlad
Aj
Wilder
Haye

Fury I doubt boxes again
The rest are a league below the fighters mentioned
