Tattoos ...why?

I never understood why /how tattoos got so popular in recent years.
Maybe someone can clue me in. Thanks.

Personally, not for me. But they can look good sometimes, such as those Yakuza style tattoos which can look quite beautiful.

In men it gives them some sort of "badass" or "warrior" look, hence masking their insecurities
In women, it makes them look like whores, wich in their heads means power or emancipation.

Most people with tatoos are cookie cutters that just go with the flow.

Governments in the UK wanted to introduce photo ID cards for everyone, it didnt happen so they made tattoos popular, now the majority have tattoos making them easy to identify.

Goes back to mental illness I mentioned above.  Also, self-loathing is another factor.

Tattoos used to be a way to stand apart from the crowd.  Now they are used as a way to fit in with the crowd.   Beards are becoming the same way now.

I got my tattoos when I was around 18 years old.  I wasn't dumb but I certainly wasn't wise at that age either.
