As a Gender Studies graduate, I am only too aware of the pervasiveness of male power which all women still experience in some way. Male privilege is so successful because it is able to present itself as natural and inevitable - but I'm here to tell you that women everywhere still face barriers that aren't in any way natural, and it is high-time that we, as confident, mentally-stable men of iron, start doing something about it!

I cannot help but succumb to lachrymosity when contemplating the fact that arguments so eloquently enunciated by Mary Wollstonecraft in 1792, and John Stuart Mill in 1869, are still struggling to be realised all across the world today. The first wave of the feminist movement should be regarded as one of our proudest achievements in history, but it doesn't, and shouldn't, stop there. The personal is political! All around us, women - particularly in developing countries - still face the most brutal forms of patriarchal power, and progress must be made. Women of the world unite! The difference is, for the most part, largely due to the reasons you stated. We need to make it easier for women to work in meaningful employment AND be able to have children, if they so wish. A socialist feminist would locate the roots of the oppression within capitalism itself, i.e. the nature of property relationships in class society. Karl Marx had argued that women's subordination came from the 'bourgeois family' which was the product of private property. Many would also highlight the unpaid domestic labour carried out by women - which contributed to a capitalist society by producing a workforce, but received no wages.

Second-wavers would object to the Marxist focus of class over gender, however. They would argue that the functions women fulfil within the private sphere - producing and raising children - stopped them from being able to play an active role in working life.
