GNC reports $433 million fourth-quarter loss
« on: February 16, 2017, 09:14:15 AM »

Whoa...

GNC today reported a fourth quarter loss of $433.4 million for the Pittsburgh-based vitamin and supplement retailer, a result that interim CEO Bob Moran said was “certainly not what any one of us wanted to see.”

The loss reflects a 12 percent drop in domestic sales among company-owned stores, as well as a $10 million expense to ready the company for its One New GNC marketing rebranding launched in late December.

A year ago, the company reported a profit of $42.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2015

Getting crushed by online retailers.

Yup.

They've had years to update their model, and they've also completely ripped off people for the past twenty years.

I generally don't blame the retailer, because i think it's on the consumer to do their own research, but in this case, even a well informed consumer got ripped because their prices on everything were so high.

The supplement industry is oversaturated everybody and their grandma has a supplement company these days and on top of that gym rats are not as naive as in the past and they are buying less fart powder.

they had enough time and success to produce their own fart powders and cut out all the middle people, producing it at wholesaler prices and selling it at retail price.

Are baby boomers starting to buy everything online? I can't imagine that millennials would even bother to go to a physical store when they live online. The young and dumb was GNC's bread and butter.

They had recently shut down all their stores for a "reset". They got rid of "super tuesday" etc... Shouldnt be hard tonfind in Reuters or Bloomberg.

The loss most likely reflects that change.

That, and an apethetic view from employees towards working for a company who screws employees out of sales contest wins and comissions. I remember mybstore had a goal of 112 sales of a particular item, which we tracked accuratley up till the end. Ended up with 122 sales, yet they said i had 110. When a cpl days earlier i had 116 verrified sales. So instead of getting my prize tv, inhad 12 sales disappear.
