http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/20/us/workers-fired-day-without-immigrants/

Jim Serowski's employees told him they'd planned to skip work Thursday to participate in "A Day Without Immigrants," the nationwide day of protest.
Serowski, founder of JVS Masonry in Commerce City, Colorado, said his position to them was clear: "If you're going to stand up for what you believe in, you have to be willing to pay the price." As promised, when Serowski's foreman and some 30 bricklayers failed to show up for work, he fired them all with no regrets, he said.

Bill McNally, owner of I Don't Care Bar and Grill in Catoosa, Oklahoma, said his 12 line cooks gave him no heads-up that they planned to participate in the day of action. They didn't even call to say they were not coming in.

=========================================

Not sure how it works in other states, but in Los Angeles County, employees have six 'paid' sick days that they can also use if you are sick, or emergencies.  Not just for taking off work.  Also, many in Los Angeles County use this as six 'personal' days in which you can request off when needed even if you are not sick, etc.

But if these employers had a policy of letting employees go if they don't show up for work and not calling in sick (which you need a note), then they have every right to fire someone, IF they have shown that they did that in the past and were not discriminatory.

They left the dude no choice.  If he lets it slide he'll have a crew that that thinks they're irreplaceable and will slack off constantly.  There's no solution for a culture of laziness in a work crew.  Once a poor work ethic takes hold the only solution is to fire everyone and start anew.

People aren't incapable of gratitude but it won't fuel production on it's own.  It's important to have an occasional human sacrifice to keep people on their toes.  Let a guy get away with bad behavior once and by the end of the week everyone will be doing it.  Reward generously, punish ruthlessly.  That's how to run people.

shit like this usually have negative repercussions for the owners, when folks start to camp out in front of his buisness it'll inevitably drive customers away. god forbid any of the owners\owners families have skeletons online.

If you're running an aroma therapy boutique then maybe the whole thing is an exercise is sensitivity and paid leave.  If you're running a construction crew then something has to happen almost every week to keep guys on their toes.  It can be a reward, a beheading, or both.

What you don't want is a bunch of guys who know they'll never get a bonus no matter how well they do, and will never get fired no matter how lazy they are.  You want the opposite.  Be capricious and despotic.

Your services will be affordable and the work will be good.  People will camp out in order to hire you.  They just want their project done well and on budget.  They don't care if you bury a few bodies in the wall to make it happen.  That's the awful truth.

Wes doesn't have to work because he's 137 years old, the same age Joe Louis was when he fought Rocky Marciano.

No one's going to drive through 1000 people blocking the road when there's another easily accessible buisness 5 mins away. More so id imagine in a hick state like tennessee republicans are not hiring others to do their home repairs, they're probably doing it themselves, it's gonna be the ponce liberals

It's not like I arrived at my conclusions the easy way, you know.  I've done it the nice guy way.  Fact is that anyone worthwhile is already running their own show.  Those who remain in the potential labor pool require a more machiavellian hand.

Besides, we're talking about 2 different things.  If a guy turns up late you fire him without a second chance.  The remaining guys are going to arrive on time.  There's not going to be a 1000 people in the street protesting that.  No one is going to give a shit.  Not sure what you think I'm talking about that would bring on protest marches.

Fired because of a race, sex, or being sick - you have a cause.

Fired because you chose not to come in, not giving any notice, not calling in, just choosing to not come in, and hurting the other 50 employees at that restaurant, not cool.

Not coming in to be part of a team when a boss/owner helped you out when times were tough in the past is just hurting the people, not a cause.

Also, was this a 'Day Without Immigrants' or a 'Day Without Illegal Immigrants'.

Wow, how incredible.  Running this guy, Luis Polanco, and the top news to come up is "Several area businesses close doors for Day Without Immigrants" because the guy featured in that article has the same name.  What are the chances, lol.

Maybe the business staged it's "America without Entrepreneurs" counter-protest?

like a quarter of all new small businesses are started by immigrants, despite being what 12-13% of the population, and that's just sole ownership.

Yes- mostly restaurants and convenience stores. When that is factored out, recent immigrant business ownership is no different than the rest of the population. My grandparents came over from Italy with their parents. First thing they did was open a grocery store. Easiest businesses to start. But we aren't talking IBM or Ford motor here, haha.

no we are, " In fact, of the U.S. companies currently valued at $1 billion or more, more than half (44 out of 87) had at least one foreign-born founder"

These protests do shit.  I don't even know if Trump knows about them.  pretty sure his inner circle is keeping him shielded from it.  Trump is only getting the "news" he wants to hear.  Protesting is lame shit.  People need to take real action. How hard would it be for a million person march in DC then have those people storm and take over the white house and Capitol building?  Maybe a few hundred deaths but that's about it.
