That thuglett is a lucky thuglett. The only way they learn anything is when you press the trigger.

Something tells me there is more to the story than how you are framing it.

Whatever started this whole thing isn't shown.  The dude only drew his pistol when several of the urban yoots started to attack him at once.

The guy may well be in the wrong for trying to detain the first kid but we don't know that yet based on what is and isn't shown the video.

Obviously we don't know what happened previously but that cop could have easily defused the situation. Instead, he escalated it and was lucky not to have killed someone.

Also, why did they handcuff the kid and not the off duty cop?

They did not file charges on the kids after all, however the Officer will be investigated.
From a recent news video i saw

http://abc7.com/news/off-duty-lapd-officer-fires-gun-during-struggle-w--teens-in-anaheim/1767766/

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) --
An off-duty Los Angeles police officer fired his weapon outside his Anaheim home during an altercation involving several juveniles.

No one was hurt during the incident, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Euclid Street and Palais Road.

According to Anaheim police, the confrontation stemmed from ongoing issues with juveniles walking across the officer's property.

As the incident escalated, a 13-year-old male allegedly threatened to shoot the off-duty officer. That's when the officer attempted to detain the juvenile until Anaheim police officers arrived.

The situation between the officer and the boy turned physical, with several other juveniles joining in, Anaheim police said.

During the struggle, the officer reached for his gun and opened fire. No one was injured.

The circumstances surrounding the firing of the weapon were being investigated by the Anaheim Police Department's Homicide Detail.

The 13-year-old boy was arrested and booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall for criminal threats and battery. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested for assault and battery and was released to his parents.

The case is set to be presented to the Orange County District Attorney's Office when it is completed. The names of those involved in the incident were not released.

The Los Angeles Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation into the actions of the officer, Anaheim police said.

Story that goes along with video -

Not enough info to tell if the officer in the wrong.

Of course he's in the wrong, he almost killed someone instead of letting the kid go.

This is what happens when young people aren't taught respect for adults, Dindus and other "types" are introduced into civilized society and overstressed urban cops can't escape said Dindus.

Clearly the whole situation was unfortunate, and an intensifying series of idiotic decisions, on everyone's part.

Cop wants to come home from his daily struggle to some peace and sanity. Instead there are irreverent Dindus regularly hooting and jiving across his lawn.

They're disrespectful and he's pissed and stressed out = bad scene.

Nope, you don't see the start of it. That article mentions that it is an ongoing thing with kids from that school, so who knows if those kids were purposely messing with him after a certain point, and this just wasn't their lucky day. Also there is ambiguity as to whether they knew he was a cop, etc.....

While it maybe  ::), he could have the legal right to stop the kid, and if they knew he was a cop, and still rushed him, etc..., it could be defensible for the gun to come out.

I'm willing to chalk this one up to a bunch of assholes all meeting at the same time.

I love how the pig stepped all over his neighbors grass and dragged the kid past his neighbors nice trimmed hedge and put a bullet through his neighbors sprinkler system to drag the kid over to his house.

If this little shit is already threatening to shoot someone at age 13 then he is a piece of shit.  His parents, if they are even still around, are also pieces of shit.  Fuck him and his whole crew.

Cowards only respect strength.  They were all ready to brawl and looking tough until the cop pulled out his sidearm.  Then all of a sudden they were all bailing.

De-escalating this situation would not solve the problem.  The kids would see it as weakness and there would be "blood in the water", so to speak.

There is a great show called nightwatch that follows paramedics, police and fire in New Orleans. Many of gang members they scrape off the pavement shot are teenagers. One was shot and thrown out of moving car.

Age is meaningless in the gang world.

The kids in the video were not swearing or taunting the guy, no one even threw a punch when they finally (after 7 minutes) tried to free their friend. If you saw that as the cop being in a threatening situation, you must have ulterior reasoning.

If the cops were on their way, they could have picked the kid up on the next block.

The off duty cop is supposedly trained to handle much worse on a daily basis.

Sounds (correct English) like some black people better get ready for some serious jail time... and I'm part Black with close Black Friends.. But if someone makes threats, they should be Prepared for a response.. that's only rational..so how about being rational and thinking things through and talking like human beings??

Nonsense.  He was trying to detain the kid and the kid was resisting.  The video clearly shows the other kids starting to get aggressive.  Only then did he draw his weapon.  Whether or not the were swearing is not relevant and we can't fully tell if they or were not swearing in the video.  We've all seen the videos of what happens when a bunch of young minorities get aggressive with a lone white person.  They gang up and stomp the shit out of their white ass and then run off like a the cowards they are.  He was right to draw his weapon when he did.

Important to add that more details will eventually come out on whether he was right to detain the kid or not.  The cop could have been in the wrong on that, we don't know.  Also, we need to find out if he fired a warning shot or if he had a negligent discharge.
