White House confirms conversation with FBI about Trump and Russia

Reince Priebus, FBI director James Comey and deputy director Andrew McCabe had a conversation which appears to violate justice department rules

Can you summarize what happened in your own words instead of plagiarizing out-of-context quotes from the internet?

From the CNN "report"....BREAKING NEWS!

The FBI rejected a recent White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Donald Trump’s associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign, multiple US officials briefed on the matter tell CNN.

But a White House official said late Thursday that the request was only made after the FBI indicated to the White House it did not believe the reporting to be accurate.

White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14.

The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations.

Late Thursday night, White House press secretary Sean Spicer objected to CNN’s characterization of the White House request to the FBI.

“We didn’t try to knock the story down. We asked them to tell the truth,” Spicer said. The FBI declined to comment for this story.

The discussions between the White House and the bureau began with FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus on the sidelines of a separate White House meeting the day after the stories were published, according to a US law enforcement official.

So, the White House asked the FBI to refute or comment or whatever on several "stories" (anonymously sourced, of course) that weren't true or accurate. The FBI said 'No' because it doesn't want to call balls and strikes and stories and it doesn't want to comment on possible ongoing investigations.

Wow. Huge stuff here, folks.

Huffers' Post is a disgrace.  Arianna Huffington really, really badly screwed up when she sold that the way she did.

I guess that means "no"?  You still don't realize that what you posted is fake news?

Hey, an actual source!

"....appears to violate..."

Another great media parlor trick...."...Appears to violate..." which means it doesn't but they want you to think that it does so they can set the narrative.

You obviously have difficulty with the term. Too many will call out "fake news" anytime they disagree with a news source. Sad !

“The White House appears to have violated accepted protocols and procedures,” said former FBI special agent Ali Soufan.

Special agent, not a lawyer.

Your headline and this thread is fake news.  You cannot even summarize in your own words how Trump tried to influence an FBI investigation.

Because they didn't try to influence anything. If the reports are true they asked the FBI to start publicly calling bullshit on the bullshit "stories."

They declined. That's fine.

Hey don't throw him a lifeline.  lol   :)

But you are correct.  What I heard is the FBI official approached Preibus and told him the stories were BS.  Preibus then asked if the FBI could say publicly that the story was BS.  The FBI declined.

I doubt this will stop "Nick Danger" from running with this fake news story.

Nah.  I know this is sorta circular reasoning, but only fake news stories are fake news.  For example, I don't think CNN is a fake news network, but they do post fake news stories.

And some like Huffington Post are incredibly dishonest.  One example is the guy who was nominated for labor secretary.  Huffington Post ran a story saying he was accused of beating his ex wife.  When you read the story, buried near the end is a quote from his ex wife recanting, saying it never happened.  Many other examples like this, but I completely understand why Trump is railing on the media.

Honestly, even though I think he complains too much, I like the fact someone is finally punching back.

I think that you shouldn't attack the press to be honest. Let them say whatever they want. No big deal. They do that.

I also think it's our job as citizens to look at the report as a whole and make decisions on what we agree or disagree with.

Why should the press be able to attack people, violate people's privacy, ruin reputations, engage in extreme bias, race bait, and then be immune from criticism?

You're assuming the White House's story is true, the FBI wouldn't confirm it. All Trump has to do is declassify the information and we'd get the truth right now. Keep chirping about "fake news" I'm enjoying your snowflake meltdowns.

Well at least you didn't just plagiarize some fake news headlines this time.   :)

What is classified?  The discussion Preibus had with the FBI official?  He already talked about it, so how can it be classified?

Nobody in this thread is melting down.  lol  The only meltdowns I see are you folks suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome.

I don't dislike many of Trump's policies, I just think the guy is a complete buffoon.
I just can't comprehend how you guys fall for/overlook all his bs.
Before the election your (republicans) stance was he's better than the alternative but now he can do no wrong.
Only his trade policies will affect me directly.

I don't think it's immune, but the free press is a cornerstone of this country. The idea that we can start denigrating it and it's "ok", is a problem to me.

You have freedom to say what you like. So should they. Fundamental cornerstones of our democracy.

Looks like, yet again, the media has been caught pushing false narratives and fake news.

The story is a big nothing. A question was asked and answered.

You seem to have an acute case, seek medical attention. You also bought a bogus narrative, in this case, but it's early.

Part of free speech means the press can report the news, even in a biased and unfair way, and we the people can criticize them for how they report the news.  That doesn't take away from their freedom.

A free press is vital to democratic society for the perhaps not-so-obvious FACT that it's the only secure way toward truth.  That's it.  Nothing else can be trusted.

So it's not surprising to see how a sad excuse for a "free press" has led all the dummies into thinking that it means nothing more than a press unaffected by an outside influence such as President Trump who is understandably angry with them.

Um, no, assholes!  You're not a free press.  You're a select billion-dollar club of degenerates who warped the idea of free press into something which works entirely AGAINST the meaning of the thing.  You did that for your own sick purposes.  You don't have nearly enough angry people after you!

Think about that when you want the truth, amigos.
