Tucker Carlson Induces Cognitive Dissonance in Bill Nye the Science Guy over Climate Change (video)
Dilbert.com ^ | 2-28-2017 | Scott Adams
Posted on 2/28/2017,

Here is the best (and weirdest) example of cognitive dissonance you will ever see. The set-up is that Bill Nye, an engineer by training, and a proponent of science, is defending climate science on Tucker's show.

The first weird thing is that Bill Nye starts by talking about cognitive dissonance being the only reason that anyone would be skeptical of global warming. But he seems to not understand the concept of cognitive dissonance because he believes only the other side could be experiencing it. The nature of cognitive dissonance is that you don't know you're in it when you're in it. It is only obvious to observers. If Nye had been objective, he would have noted two equal possibilities: Either the skeptics are experiencing cognitive dissonance or the proponents of climate science are experiencing it. But whoever is in it can't know. It is only obvious to the other side. That's how it works.

Yes, I do the same thing all the time. I call out my critics for being in cognitive dissonance and act as if the problem couldn't be on my end. But in my case, the context is usually that I'm teaching you how to spot it. And I also talk about the specific triggers and "tells" so you can check my work. This video has a clear trigger and an enormous tell. Best example you will ever see.

The set-up for the trigger is that Nye's self-image is that of a rational supporter of science with a command of the facts about climate science. He has made a career recently of defending science, and climate science in particular. Nye's ego depends on being consistent with his pro-science, rational stance. That's who he is.

Tucker then asked Nye a simple question about climate science. He asked how much of the warming is caused by human activity. Nye's entire ego depended on knowing whether human activity is contributing to climate change in a big way, a medium way, or a small way. Tucker wanted some details. How much difference do humans make? After all, Nye had said this was settled science. Tucker just wanted to know what that settled science said.

Nye didn't know. And by not knowing that simple answer about the percentage of human contribution to warming - the only issue that really mattered to the topic - he proved in public that his opinions on science are not based on facts or knowledge. Nye tried and tried to dodge the question, but Tucker was relentless. That was the trigger. Nye could plainly see, thanks to Tucker's simple question, that his belief in science was just a belief, because he didn't actually know the science. When your self-image and ego get annihilated on live television, you can't simply admit you have been ridiculous all along. Your brain can't let you do that to yourself. So instead, it concocts weird hallucinations to force-glue your observations into some sort of semi-coherent movie in which you are not totally and thoroughly wrong. That semi-coherent movie will look like a form of insanity to observers.

Look for Nye to go totally mental in the last minute of the clip, changing the topic to political leaks for no apparent reason. That's your tell. His brain just sort of broke right in front of you.

People do and say dumb things all the time, and it isn't always cognitive dissonance. That's why you look for the trigger to make sure the "tell" was what you thought it was.

To be fair, spotting cognitive dissonance is more like bird-watching than science. Sometimes you misidentify a bird. But this example is like an ostrich sitting on your lap. Hard to miss. Enjoy.

I watched that interview.  Pretty bad that the guy couldn't answer a simple question.  Arrogant man.

The survey found 97% agreed that global temperatures have increased during the past 100 years; 84% say they personally believe human-induced warming is occurring, and 74% agree that "currently available scientific evidence" substantiates its occurrence.

Why must you tow the line on everything?  I can tell from your posts that although conservative, you aren't stupid.  Why is it
that even smart conservatives are afraid to admit that facts are facts?  Don't lower yourself to coach's or dare I say soul crushers
level and play the anti science card.  Please.

I don't toe anyone's line.

It sounds like you didn't watch the interview.  My comments didn't have anything to do with the broader question of where there is "climate change"/"global warming."  It was about this guy's inability to answer a very simple question:  how much do humans contribute to climate change.

That's it.  This guy refused to answer the question.  Started insulting Carlson.  Tried to change the subject.  If you watched the interview you'll see it plain as day.

didn't watch the video but NASA website says that human activity has caused much of the observed increase in Earth's temperatures over the past 50 years.

Of course "much" is not a specific percentage and I suspect Carlson knew this which is why he asked for a specific %

It would be like asking a Doctor what specific percentage of lung cancer is caused by smoking

Of course there is no way to answer that but it doesn't negate the fact that smoking causes lung cancer is a certain amount of the population

The role of human activity
In its Fifth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded there's a more than 95 percent probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed our planet.

The industrial activities that our modern civilization depends upon have raised atmospheric carbon dioxide levels from 280 parts per million to 400 parts per million in the last 150 years. The panel also concluded there's a better than 95 percent probability that human-produced greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide have caused much of the observed increase in Earth's temperatures over the past 50 years.

The panel's full Summary for Policymakers report is online at http://ipcc.ch/pdf/assessment-report/ar5/syr/AR5_SYR_FINAL_SPM.pdf.

I am personally of the belief that, regardless of whether climate change is human-induced or not, we best put our efforts and money into developing the technology to be able to colonize another planet.

Technology is making exponential human growth possible, and pretty soon this planet will be impossible to live in.

Either we move on or there will be a huge self-perpetrated human cataclysm.

You've been warned Crackers.

Tucker actually looked like a complete idiot by asking Bill a question and interrupting him as soon as he tried to answer...even called him out on it.

Also, not sure where you got "failed engineer".  Hard to get a job at NASA or Boeing if you're a failure.... ::)

Carlson: You don't reach correct conclusions in science or politics or any other field unless you can ask honest answers without being shouted down by people like you.

Nye: I don't think you meant "ask" but I know what you mean.

Carlson: No, I do mean "ask".

I never met Bill Nye and only know him as a public figure.

However, I did give a brief, and complete proof to why we have CO2 induced climate change.
It's the 5th post in this thread.

I have yet to receive any comment or refute of my posted proof.

Thanks, Howard

SO WHAT?

So its get a  a little warmer?  The worst thing this fruitcake could cite was grapes growing in UK.   Thats it?   All this cultish doomsday BS over grapes growing in the UK?

And for that we are supposed to re-engineer our entire lives and society?  GTFO.

Now, to answer your basic question about what to do.
Well for starters we don't need to stop driving cars or manufacturing things.
It's all about MODERTION and sensible conservation.

As my old prof said ; " CONSERVATION  is the wise use of resources, PRESERVATION is never using resources."

Moderation and sensible conservation?  That is a very non-specific answer to very specific and important question.

This is what is at the root of my concern about global warming hysteria.

1.  If we agree that human beings are causing global warming, is that warming a serious existential threat to the planet and human civilization?  If so, how do we measure that and prove it?

2.  Is there a measurable way to reverse global warming and can it be done without overburdening our citizens, crippling our economy and making us vulnerable to our geopolitical allies?

3.  If the USA does every thing possible to correct the problem, will it make any difference if China, India, etc aren't also doing it.

No it's not an ignorant question at all, particularly when Nye made it an issue by saying people make a substantial contribution to climate change.

The deal is, humanity needs to all come together and do some moderate permanent changes to help planet earth survive. ;)

Unfortunately that's impossible because most of the world is nothing like the United States.  It's a mistake to believe that other cultures are as sane, intelligent and moral as we are.  If this problem is going to get solved it must be solved by American innovation.  I believe eventually it will.  If someone found a better way to get clean energy they would become a quadrillionaire.  That's more than enough motivation for someone to eventually make this happen.

I'm of the belief that scientists don't currently have a solution to reversing global warming in any kind of meaningful and measurable way even if every country was on board.....and they aren't.  That is why people are hesitant to accept much of the crippling regulation that global warming fanatics recommend.  Regular people just want a good job so they can keep a roof over their heads and feed their families.  They don't enjoy being lectured about climate change by Learjet Liberals like Leonardo DiCaprio or that fucking twat Al Gore.

It's a bullshit question. Carlson is smart enough to know it (that's exactly why he asked it).  Nye is smart enough to know it as well

It's the same as insisting you need an exact percentage of how much the consumption of high fructose corn syrup results in diabetes or obesity or the exact percentage that lack of using sun screen causes skin cancer.

There is no way to measure that so there is no answer to the question  - AGAIN SOMETHING CARLSON KNOWS WHICH IS WHY HE ASKED IT

BTW - NASA has made the exact same claim as Ney and you can read how they arrived at their conclusion in this link
