I believe that cultural diversity is possible. The issue is that people are feeling FORCED to engage in cultural diversity (i.e., they are told they must speak, act, and think a certain way). Jordan Peterson, Clinical Psychologist and Professor at the University of Toronto, came under "heat" when he said he was not going to be forced to refer to people by certain pronouns (them or they, instead of he or she). He informed students that he has no issue with respecting other people's preference to be called by a certain pronoun; however, he did not want to be FORCED to use certain pronouns when referring to others. If left alone and not bothered, I am sure Dr. Peterson would have had no issue referring to people by certain pronouns, as long as he was able to make this decision based on his own values and ideals. In fact, Dr. Peterson has worked, in his clinical practice, with MANY people from the LGBT community. Yet, the students did not seem to remember that because he did not want to use certain pronouns. Strange.
If cultural diversity is going to stand a reasonable chance in our society, it must not and cannot be forced. A person's cognitive and emotional framework of the world is not going to change by threats of bullying and harassment. That is not how someone changes. Yet, many of the so-called social justice warriors (I have no problem with true social justice) are doing exactly that--threats, bullying, harassment. It is odd that they have not considered the fact that their tactics are only making things worse.
