Putting your hands, knowingly, on the floor to avoid certain strikes from being thrown is something entirely different from protecting fighters from damage they cannot block or see coming. The fact he admitted to wanting to place his hands on the floor in an attempt to prevent knees in the post-fight says enough about his intention to exploit the rules. Backfired big time.
