Cinco de mayo marks the victory of Mexico over the French in some battle.  It is a date of Mexican national significance.

Imagine having a country like France to the south?

But then the French kicked them back in line. Think that's why it's not so big in Mexico. Political pressure made the French leave later on. Basically the US saved them.
