the original "gut" started with mr. heavy duty mike mentzer at the 1979 mr olympia. he looked good as long as he could hold his gut in. but when he was relaxed and didnt remember to hold it in it stuck out big time. in fact he looked like he didnt even lift sometimes!!! thats why arnold told him he had a fat gut at the 1980 mr olympia and mentzer lost it!! lol.  i also believe he was the first non diabetic person to use insulin to try to gain muscle. he wrote an in debth article for muscle builder/power about tim belknap ( a diabetic) and he soon after developed his gut. belknap never really got a gut but he was wide waisted and blocky. just his structure.
