"■ South Koreans are choosing a successor to former President Park Geun-hye, who was forced from office in a corruption scandal.

■ Shortly after the polls closed at 8 p.m., the Yonhap news agency said that exit polls showed that Moon Jae-in, who favors a dialogue with North Korea, was the winner with 41 percent of the vote."

■ American leaders are concerned about that a victory by Mr. Moon could lessen South Korean resolve to confront North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs.

"The spokesman for the front runner in South Korea's May 9 presidential election Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday the move by the U.S. military to deploy elements of the THAAD anti-missile defense was strongly regrettable.

Moon's spokesman, Park Kwang-on, said in a statement that the move was "very inappropriate" as it strips the next government of the right to make the policy decision on the controversial missile defense system."

South Korea Elects Moon Jae-in, Who Backs Talks With North, as President

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea elected Moon Jae-in, a human rights lawyer who favors dialogue with North Korea, as president on Tuesday, returning the nation’s liberals to power after nearly a decade in the political wilderness and setting up a potential rift with the United States over the North’s nuclear weapons program.

Mr. Moon, 64, a son of North Korean refugees, faces the challenge of enacting changes to limit the power of big business and address the abuses uncovered in his predecessor’s downfall. He must also make good on his promise of a new approach to North Korea while balancing relations with the United States and China.

His election also scrambles the geopolitics over North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. Even as the Trump administration urges the world to step up pressure on Pyongyang, it now faces the prospect of a critical ally — one with the most at stake in any conflict with the North — breaking ranks and adopting a more conciliatory approach.

Mr. Moon has argued that Washington’s reliance on sanctions and pressure has been ineffective and that it is time to give engagement and dialogue with the North another chance, an approach favored by China. He has also called for a review of the Pentagon’s deployment of an antimissile defense system in South Korea that the Chinese government has denounced.

you've just been brainwashed by the same media that told you china is on trump's side against NK.

the US continues to try to further militarise SK. NK only wants nukes to protect itself from potential US aggression.

and tbf going on recent history it has every right to be fearful of US aggression. neither the north or south want war but to the US it's just more war games on foreign soil. hopefully this new dude in sk will help to deescalate the situation.

and you sound like a terrorist sympathizer

so because i think it's a good idea that the new leader of Sk wants to re start talks with NK with the intention of de escalating further tensions... this makes me a "terrorist sympathiser"  ???

you do understand that NK is sovereign nation right ?

i personally have no problem with NK having a fully functional long range nuclear deterrent. there's far less chance of the US fking with them and starting what could end in WW3 if they have this deterrent.

how many countries have NK dropped bombs on in the last 50 yrs? then compare that to how many the US has....which country do you think is really more of a threat to world peace ?
