Brian's 2006 Training Log
« on: April 04, 2006, 11:22:39 PM »
I am a 24 year old lifetime natural. My dad got me started on weights at age 13, but I've only been training seriously for about a year. My training is centered around heavy free weight exercises, with some machines mixed in. The 5x5 training system has given me my best gains, which is why I use it on almost all upper-body exercises. I'm currently focused on increasing my bench press numbers, though I may start doing deadlifts and squats again in the near future. I am a little under 6'0" tall and weigh 245 lb, but I'm trying to lose weight at the moment.

How many times a week do you lift?  Also, how are you going about trying to lose weight?

Looking good so far.

I train around five times a week on average. I'm just eating smaller meals and eliminating all junk food. Also, I might start bike riding in a few weeks.

Some strong lifts there, very nice basic workouts. Why the hold up on squats though?

I don't have a squat rack in my garage (where I train). I can't do many deadlifts because I only have around 380 lb worth of plates, and very little room in which to do them.

Again what is your GOAL? To gain weight, to look a certain way, to compete in power lifting? You have to have a GOAL 1st.

Brian X,

No disrespect, but please read the second post (by me) in the "John Goudy part 2" sticky thread.

By the way, good luck with the online training log. I understand posting your numbers isn't the same as having people watch your workout... but for motivation, it's probably the next best thing for the home trainer.

He actually states 3-4 things he "wants to do", but has not made a "specific goal". Saying "I want to lose weight" is not specific. What he wants to weigh and how much time he expects to see that loss is goal. So, no I'm not stupid, just asking him what is he truly trying to focus on.

As far as bodyweight goes, I would like to diet down to around 210 lb. My bodyfat is probably over 20%. I might post pics once I get down to that weight.

My goal is to get as strong as possible, and perhaps enter a bench press meet.

What's your bench right now?  Heavy dips and close grips will add pounds to the bench, as will rotator cuff exercises.  It's hard to maintain or gain strength will losing weight, but is possible if you do it gradually.

So what steps have you taken to reach those goals and do you have an actual plan or are you just "winging it"?
For example is your best bench is 400 and you want to beat it, set a date like April 30th for example, then take the time in between to make the necessary training steps each week, gauge your progress by a couple of "dry" lifts and make adjustments, and log down what differences there are week to week. Facts don't lie. Then come the set date do the lift and see if you're surpassed or met your goal. It's the same formula for losing weight.
