As commentary on Comey’s firing began intensifying on the Hill and in the press, Johnson writes that Spicer, deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Kellyanne Conway made their way to TV camera crews. Initially, Sanders and Conway spoke to the press while Spicer, quite literally, hid in some bushes nearby:

After Spicer spent several minutes hidden in the bushes behind these sets, Janet Montesi, an executive assistant in the press office, emerged and told reporters that Spicer would answer some questions, as long as he was not filmed doing so. Spicer then emerged.

“Just turn the lights off. Turn the lights off,” he ordered. “We'll take care of this. ... Can you just turn that light off?”
Spicer got his wish and was soon standing in near darkness between two tall hedges, with more than a dozen reporters closely gathered around him.

According to Johnson, Spicer claimed to reporters that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had launched a probe of Comey completely independently and that Trump had been unaware of its existence until Tuesday. Spicer told reporters that he didn’t know whether Attorney General Jeff Sessions had been involved, whether Trump had spoken with Rosenstein about the findings in his memo about Comey, whether Rosenstein was involved in a larger probe of the FBI, or when Trump and Comey had last spoken. After 10 minutes, he left. “Spicer walked with his head down,” Johnson writes. “As he approached the door, aides warned reporters not to get too close. He then disappeared inside, enveloped by the warmly lit White House.”

Incidentally, Sanders will run Wednesday's White House press briefing, not Spicer.

Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, appears to be bearing most of the blame for the media firestorm caused by FBI Director James Comey’s termination.

Politico reported Thursday that President Donald Trump was holding an audition for Spicer’s replacement on Wednesday when he had the deputy White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, perform the daily press briefing.

According to The Washington Post, Trump has been irate with his communications team, which, he believes, fumbled the rollout over Comey’s abrupt firing. Since Comey discovered he was fired via a breaking news broadcast, media outlets have run wall-to-wall coverage speculating whether the president inappropriately fired his FBI director in order to impede an investigation he was leading against him.

According to The Post, Trump sat down for dinner and TV on the night of Comey’s firing and noticed that no one one on cable news was defending him. The president somehow landed on Spicer as the person responsible for all the negative coverage.

“This is probably the most egregious example of press and communications incompetence since we’ve been here,” one West Wing official told The Post. “It was an absolute disaster. And the president watched it unfold firsthand. He could see it.”

It likely did not help Spicer’s job prospects when his first public briefing with reporters after Comey’s dismissal came outside of the White House, in the dark, among the bushes.

One White House official told CNN that the reason Sanders performed the press briefing Wednesday was because Spicer had been benched this week.

Another official disputed this, noting that Spicer has Navy Reserve duties this week and, therefore, he could not be on the White House grounds to brief reporters.

He may be fired because he wasn't informed of the party line lie at the time.
Huckabee-Sanders, Mike Pence and countless others all lied telling the same story for over 24hrs.

The least likely people you’d expect to feel badly for embattled White House press secretary Sean Spicer are those with whom he has sparred with the most.

So it came as a surprise to some on Wednesday when Spicer received an outpouring of sympathy. The reason: as U.S. President Donald Trump met with Pope Francis at the Vatican, Spicer — a devout Catholic — was noticeably absent from the entourage.

Those in attendance included first lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, national security adviser H.R. McMaster; Hope Hicks, Trump’s communications adviser; Keith Schiller, his former bodyguard; and Dan Scavino, his social media manager. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are both Jewish but nonetheless met with the pontiff.

I find this really funny but at the same time feel pretty bad for the guy.

EVERY President has a press sec that can act like some boot licking stooge.
Trump has placed Spicer in an impossible position more than other modern Presidents.

For example, on the Comey firing, Trump sent his team out with 1 story.
Spicer, the VP, Conway, etc , all said he was fired due to the recommendation of the deputy AG.

Then , 48 hrs later, he goes on national TV and tell Lester Holt, it was all his choice.

Doing this, throws your staff "under the bus" and makes them look bad.
It's not illegal to do this, but, it is poor leadership and makes things look chaotic.
