Stitcher runs on iOS 7.  You can get podcasts to run on it.

Do you ever consider the free upgrades that get offered?  There's been probably over a thousand since the iphone 4.

What carrier are you on?

His iphone is 4 yo though, I will say he got his money worth.
But Anyway, it can, maybe, be done.
1.) Google install new apps on older iOS.There are work arounds.
2.) And if new app requires a newer iOS version, apple is almost on version 11, he got 7. Jailbreak and install older versions of apps.
3.) go to swappa and buy an iphone 5 or better, starting at 80 bucks...

There's always deals for a free upgrades.

Right now certified pre-owned 6s is only 18/mth in addition to a plan.  Eons better than the 4.

If you asked them if they could help you out you might get it cheaper.

My Huawei with Android 4.1 of peace as well, and I have no problems with installing/upgrading apps.

Yeah, but falcon's problem was trying to install an OS that wasn't supported by the model of the phone he has.  That's not a good example to use to make a case against Apple products' "ease of use".

My point is that the backward compatibility issues from these iPhone apps aren't a sign of user friendliness. My Android OS version became a dinosaur, but -again-, I had no upgrade or installing issues with the latest apps.

It is a sign of apps requiring needed maintenance. as a user of both oses, google play Store is full of shit and malware. I don't want abandoned apps and buggy shit on my phone.

I'm not a fan of apple, either - but he has an iphone 4 and that was first released in 2010, so yeah.. maybe time to allow apple to abandon supporting it.
