most of those on here that post will not know who he was. just like i will never know the "modern? singers etc. of course back in the day these people had talent worked their butts off to earn a recording contract etc. nowdays they give them to anyone. people have little to no talent and get records etc from screaming or making stupid "talk" records ( rap anyone? ) and then when someone like gregg dies they say who and only talk about cher.
Your post makes me laugh. Just because you are old and out of touch doesn't mean singers/performers today don't have talent. Today its harder to be a mega star because there are so many others out there ready to take your place. Plus, record companies want to make money, if the performer isn't in the latest music genre that makes money they drop them. Look at Darrius Rucker, finding success doing country. Do you honestly believe old Darrius made that decision himself? Nope, his people did.
As for long ago, your musicians were fueled on cocaine and ludes. Radio station DJ's were paid off to play music with money and drugs. Gregg was a herion addict along with booze and coke. Most of those guys were, they didn't have handlers (like today) to say "Hey dude, you need to chill or were dropping you, get your ass in rehab." The 1960's and 70's were a free for all.
Check out Gregg's rendition of Skynyrd's Tuesday's Gone and of course his most popular hit that was played on Top 40 radio stations "I'm No Angel."
STAY POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
