Uppers sure help even if you are self-motivated and can train hard without them. There's a reason
these things are tested for in competition settings. Personally a "speed-ball" stack is best.

Downers may be
counterintuitive in a training/competition setting but they can help in pushing harder than you ever did before.
One thing I found fascinating is the research that came out on paracetamol/apap. It has been shown to improve cycling and
sprint performance. But what's really interesting is the psychological effects. It reduces psychological pain, not just physical pain.

Now I didn't try the alcohol myself yet. But the reasoning can apply to other drugs as well, what I said about the "downers".
