I find it rather strange that North Korea was able to keep him alive for the past 14 month since his brain injury, and it's only when he gets back on US soil that he dies. 

From what I heard when his doctors say during a recent forum, he was not on life support. His parents requested the doctors not talk about his prognosis. Seems like if there was a way of just letting him go, they may have chosen that. Using generalities, this team of doctors indicated people do not recover from this type of brain injury.
