Work with this guy, says he's retiring in China. His wife's Chinese and goes there all the time. Says the air is shitty in the cities but ok in the countryside. Loves it there. Calls bs on all the bad publicity in the west.
I heard the exact opposite about China from a friend who visited with her fiance last summer. Her bf's parents are from China and it was both of their first times there, and they absolutely hated it. She said the streets were dirty, people were rude, bedbugs in every hotel/hostel they stayed at, food was gross and gave them stomach issues the whole trip. She said Hong Kong was really nice, very westernized, great food, nice people, etc...
Maybe if her bf was actually from there/grew up there they would've known what to avoid or where to go, but she suggested to me to never visit that country lol. I shall heed her advice.
