That's exactly what it is.  It's easy enough to find charities with a low overhead, to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

As for the OP, I donate a little more than $1000/year.  A goal is to get that up to 10% of my income.  Hopefully within 10 years

Why no love for cats on this website? I grew up with loyal cats, who would sleep between my legs, every night. Had a Persian cat (named Precious) who gave birth to seven kittens in my mother's closet. The fattest one we named: Big Boss Man. But we still made sure that the runt of the litter got his share.

I donate blood several times per year, really for my own benefit. I donate all my used clothes and household goods to my housekeeper. I sometimes give a few dollars to the homeless, mostly women. I'm doing my share..

Nothing.  Not because the head of the charity keeps the money and not because I don't see a worthwhile cause.  I'm just really selfish. 

But I probably wouldn't hijack a food shipment intended for starving people and sell it for pennies on the dollar to a company that would process it into HFCS with full knowledge that it would increase diabetes, and then blow the money on some non-essential trinket, and then send the starving people a photograph of me holding the trinket next to a fat diabetic.  I might but I probably wouldn't.

My guess is the average of GetBigger donations, excluding Mormons, is less than 1% of income a year, if that.

I used to give a percentage of my paycheck (bi-weekly) to the United Way for years. To be honest, I am ashamed to say that I cannot remember if I still do or not. 90% of the time I donate something, every time a cashier asks for it. Not to mention the girl scout cookies, and basketball/baseball camps I have contributed to.

As far as homeless people go...... I have seen the same guy, begging in the same spot, for months now. I refuse to help him.

If you stand in the same spot, every single day, then you do not want to improve your situation. That line isn't just for homeless people.

Guessing $600 a year. St. Jude, PVA, and various animal rescue type charities are examples of the type I give to. I also occasionally give to street beggar depending on how bad off they appear to be, but it's rare. I also donate a similar amount in clothing, books, etc.... to Goodwill.
