Can someone play devil's advocate here though and explain?

All I can think of is Syria (where they're completely justified in fighting ISIS and backing the democratically elected government) or Ukraine where the US was also trying to overthrow the government?

The left is trying to recreate the 1950s communist Soviet Union(Russia) "witchhunt" except against someone(Trump) that is obviously not a communist or a Russian agent. It's a goof done with a complicit media. It would be like Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu being accused of being a German, therefore Nazi, spy.  Russians have always been spying just like climate has always been changing and it's easy to get a lot of pseudo-intellectuals to go along with it because they actually believe it.
