It means you competed as an eligible college student and placed first or second in a given sport. 1st team and second team, respectively.

I was a national champiion, which means I was an all-american, first team. It means that I was first place.

In 1988 I was also pound for for pound the strongest lifter in the nationals, as determined by the "schwartz formula". Oh, this was @ Temple Unitversity, if anyone wants to check.

I was Google'ing some powerlifting sites and ran across this - http://www.usaplnationals.com/2005womens/champions.html Not only do the women lift some respectable weights, some are pretty good looking. My favorite is Priscilla Ribic.
