History of Dyoderm-Protan use in bodybuilding?
« on: July 29, 2017, 06:01:03 PM »
Do any of the old old timers know when this horrid shit was first used in bodybuilding. My first time using it was 1985. In my opinion...it added to the farce of competitive bodybuilding. From what I gather it wasnt used in the early and mid 70's. I remember attending a Frank Zane seminar in 96 in which he said he never used any tanning stain for a show...only relying on a full summers worth of Palm Springs daily tanning. IMO....Zane sported a crazy tan and looked crazy tan onstage too. So why in the fuck did guys start using this shit. Just made and still makes guys look like freakshow attractions on the day of the show when walking around the general public. Like a streaky brown-red dunked in shit freak.

Maybe not everyone lives in Palm Springs. I couldn't imagine Dorian getting much of a take in Birmingham, England

No way dudes like Wolf could get anywhere close to a tan, he could spend hours in a tanning bed for a year and he would just get red.

BEEF, Here's what I recall about Dyoderm and its usage.

Feel free to correct me where and if I'm incorrect.

Dyoderm (or however it is correctly spelled) was originally a product developed for and used by morticians in an effort to make cadavers (dead guys in open caskets) look more pleasant.

And if I am not mistaken ... it was Jeff Everson who 'packaged' the product for bodybuilders to make them look more 'pleasant".

I believe that I was one of the first retailers of that stuff.

Once applied ... it smelled pretty bad and if I recall correctly .... it often resulted in a greenish tint to the body of some who used it.

It was pretty damn successful at that time but then other and better 'browning' agents appeared within the bodybuilding market and Dyoderm died a slow death similar to those cadavers who used it originally.

It's possibly still used by the young guns who frequent the shores of Jersey City and it's night spots.

And as you most likely know ... frequent sunbathing is a common cause of skin cancer.

NOTE: Then these 'browning agents' caused additional problems which had to be solved ... and I believe ... eventually were.

More on that if interested....... And other shit that you may not be aware !

Some tan lotions look better on already tanned skin.

MEGA, Some people just don't know how to apply it correctly or maybe they are using a shitty brand of this stuff.

And in the above photo it looks like he applied a coat of oil before it dried throughly.

I forget the names of these products but one of these products had some gold color flakes which at first was pretty damn impressive for photo shoots.
