Living in Los Angeles
« on: July 31, 2017, 06:25:41 PM »
I have an career opportunity in LA that is very lucrative. I have a great position and salary now but can add another 30% to it. I live in the Midwest now so I know the cost of living is going to be considerably higher there. I have been to LA for work several times and I really like it there. But working there a week at a time and living there is 2 different things.

I am looking for any good constructive advice from those who live in the area or have lived there. If I make the move I will be looking to live in the Carson/Torrance area. Thanks in advance.

I personally can't stand it there. The people are rude and shit is overpriced. If you've been there several times, I guess you know that already though.

A shanty in Torrance runs about $1,000,000. -Small apartments are $1,400 to $3,000 a month. Carson's about the same. There is a lot of diversity in both these places. You can't beat the weather, especially if you're near the coast and get the cooling breezes off the Pacific. It's very different from the Midwest. There's not much need for winter clothing.

There all the time for work. Lived in Santa Monica for about six months as well. Great place for outdoor activities like surfing, snow boarding, hiking, etc... When I lived there I wasn't making the money I am now, and it was a harder place to live. My rent was high, car insurance, dating hot girls was more expensive, there is no public transit, very hard in general to get around with everything so spread out and so many drivers in LA county. I was there last week and it's a great place to be if you have some money but god damn that 101 traffic sucks.

Where is the office you'd work out of? That would dictate living location.

If you have to commute during rush hour, then live close to where you work.  Sort of an LA staple.  An hour commute can really be 10 miles.  Enough to make you go nuts.  LA is like a nation within itself. So just being in LA can mean just being within your 15 mile radius.  If you move make sure your company gives you enough relocation money to live in a nice apt for 6 months while you shop for a home.  Once in LA getting a job at another company is easy.  They are hiring a lot of people.  Where in LA is your company office located?

Once you find a place to live before putting down all your money, stay in a hotel nearby and try the commute out a few days to see if its tolerable.

The office is in Compton. That was why I was looking at the Carson, Torrance area. I have been checking Long Beach as well but it shows the crime is higher there than Carson. I may have to do a condo. I already have been shown the relocation package, it is very generous.

Bro, this is Getbig. We have all been offered generous packages at one time or another.

The traffic is horrendous. It would sometimes take me 1-2 hours to drive 12 miles.

That worries me because I have trouble with road rage at times. I would just have to eat a Xanax bar for the drive home.

The 30% salary increase will be eaten up by the difference in the cost of living.

Speaking of Xan bars I tried a half of one of those the the other night. I could have slept for three days. Jesus. I loved being knocked out like that though, hard time getting 7-8 hrs sleep. Not with those.

I am prescribed and take 60mg of morphine sulfate and 4- 10-325 norco every day. But if I eat the smallest dose Xanax I turn into a sloppering jellyfish.

If I get a place in Carson it is only 5 minutes from the office. The VP recruiting me lives there. But as mention prior, houses are fucking nuts. The house I have here in Indiana and land would be worth 2.5-3 million there I would guess.

Plus they are going to have to raise taxes on guys like you, to pay for the other half there.

Add to everything said, a 7.25% sales tax and this sliding scale income tax rate (which you can add cap gains to).

Tax Bracket   Tax Rate
$0.00+   1%
$15,700.00+   2%
$37,220.00+   4%
$58,744.00+   6%
$81,546.00+   8%
$103,060.00+   9.3%
$526,444.00+   10.3%
$631,732.00+   11.3%
$1,000,000.00+   12.3%
$1,052,886.00+   13.3%

I worked for a company out of CA for eleven years and no matter what they offered me remained in my peaceful tax free haven.

Oh and over a trillion in state and local debt.

With all the negatives one thing that is a major plus for me is the weather there. With 5 major back surgeries under my belt these cold ass winters here cripple me every winter. The warm weather would definitely increase my quality of life.

LA is a good place to live and experience, doesnt mean you need to try* to buy a home and get married.

live as close your work as possible, try to be as "neighborhood" as you can

get a roommate

cali will fuck you over 100 times but move there to change shit up

My girlfriend will be going with me. She will be able to transfer there. I am going to retire in 5 years so I figured I could just live out life there. Spending my days on the beach. It is either Cali or Florida for retirement.

LA is cool. Great restaurants, I do dives, they are the best. Great weather. Great gyms. I'm have some liberal ideas but def not a lib and I love LA. So much to do and experience. I live not far from Carson. Check Torrance. It's close to Compton. Would take no time at all to get there. Can't beat the weather. You'll find nice and rude people everywhere in the US. Sometimes our outer world just happens to coincide or reflect our inner attitudes and thoughts. I say go for it!

Thank you Slik, 2 very good replies. Florida is definitely my 2nd choice. I just want warmth and sand when I am done working.
