Royce was exposed when other MMA guys realized he has zero striking skills.  He is a legend in the sport but in today's game you need a ground game and a stand up.  Royce would be punished severely trying to get today's martial artists down to the ground.

Royce is only a couple of decades away from today's champs. Not thousands of years.

You're missing one point though. UFC 1 had no Mixed Martial Artists, it was people from different disciplines facing off each other, from Judo to Karate to Kick Boxers...MMA evolved later on.

From a specialised disciplined vs another specialised discipline his BJJ proved very successful, he beat some vicious monster strikers Kimo springs to mind.

Only because he pulled Kimo's hair. Kimo did a great job in avoiding going to the ground for a while.

So?

Only banned moves in UFC 1 were biting and scratching. Even groin strikes and kicks to head whilst down were allowed, there's even a video of Kimo head butting an opponent on the ground which is pretty awesome and scary.

If Kimo wasn't on steroids, Royce would've crushed Kimo in less than 2 minutes

Matt Hughes made Gracie an example of old school versus a well rounded mixed martial artist some years ago when they competed against one another. He beat him up badly, and easily. Gracie is a legend, but whenever something comes onto the scene, such as the UFC, or NHB fighting, there will be an evolution through education, etc. It's only natural. Just look at NFL players from years ago compared to their modern day counterparts, for example.
