Is it worth it?

Can I justify it if I'm self employed?

???

I don't think any knowledge is necessarily bad, but I have to be honest that the only people who seem to care about MBAs are Corporate structures.

If you work for yourself, you're probably better off expanding your actual skill set, but, if you have a decent amount of employees, you might learn something that helps you manage the group more efficiently.

It's a tough call when you run your own place.

Doesn't hurt to get educated.

But do the math on program cost and the eventual return.

Know a few people work MBAs and it hasn't paid off for everyone.

If you're gonna climb corporate ladder then it'll help. But otherwise it's overstated degree field

Maybe there are other masters level degrees with different concentrations that may be more marketable.

Never believed in higher education.Reason being is I know a lot of guys with degrees from prestigious schools that either can't get a job or don't make much money st the ones they have.you don't have to be the smartest guy just hire the smartest people.

I never gained anything from it. I think I was actually more intelligent before I was subjected to hours and hours of mindless curriculum that should be common sense. Good point

That's true, but a degree from an elite school definitely opens more doors, and affords more contacts and opportunities.

Higher education should be where you are confronted by new ideas that make you think. And that help you become better mentally, physically, and prepare you for the world at large.

The problems with your statement is that many of the things you use today, your car, and many electronics were thought up, designed and engineered by those with a higher education.

If you are self employed(and what you do works...) then maybe it would be beneficial when bringing in outside partners or to raise capital. Other than that...nope.

I would advise against it unless you 1) are going for a job with a company that requires it
Or 2) someone is paying the tuition for you. In that case free learning is always good!

The company I work at pays for tuition if they see it being helpful to the work you do. I have been in a masters program part time for computer science, and am now applying for tuition help from the company since I'm a developer and this directly helps me with my work. If I was offered a management position, and they required me to have an MBA, I would go and do it as long as they paid for it (which I would imagine they would).
So I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you're going to pay for it out of pocket and not have a plan to use it directly for a promotion or a well paying job, then its not worth it. If you have an opportunity to get promoted or land a well paying job which requires an MBA, then do it (even if its out of pocket).
The first couple years of my master's program I've been paying out of pocket because I know I will need it if I want to  move up from developer to manager (or higher). I just started working at this company this year, and they offered me to apply for tuition help.

It depends on what you mean by self employed, if you're consulting/lending your skills to the corporate world it will help both from a day to day point as well as winning new work.

If you own a sales business...etc for example perhaps investing that money and extra effort into your business is a better idea. MBA is not a walk in the park and time/ energy consuming.

I think it depends on the field. Masters in Science, math, engineering would be worth it. I work in IT as a manger, two of the guys on my team have their MBA and they make less and dont have any managerial duties. I personally dont believe an MBA is worth based on the number of people I see with them and their role in the company and the projects they are assigned.

An MBA might be worth something when you're starting out. If you are already on a career path I haven't seen it make a big difference. Our main competitor is very strict about qualifications, yet they are always just trend followers and they have tremendous mgt overhead.
