Frank Zane didn't look that great in 1979

Imo, Robby Robinson or Mike Mentzer (he won the over 200 pounds category) should have won the overall that year. Even Boyer Coe and Dennis Tinerino looked better than Zane in 1979. Zane was tiny and just didn't look that great. Also, look how long the 199 pound Arnold's hair was in 1979!  :o

Or 82....

I think he looked better in 1983 where he competed at 180 pounds, than he did at the 1982 where he weighed just over 200 pounds. That said, he looked better in 1982 than he did both in 1979 and 1980 imo.

Coe didn't have abs and Tinerino looked okay from the front and side but was weak from the back.  An argument could be made for Mentzer winning the overall, but you can't deny that Zane looked amazing at the 1979 O.

Excellent conditioning, he looks like a statue in some of those shots.

I was at the show and Zane was an easy winner in 1979, the best he ever looked.

Funny to see Arnold with the long hair. I always thought the long hair he had for Conan was a wig.

Good luck finding any quality pics from the '79 O online.  In fact I couldn't find one decent pic of Robby from that show, which is kind of weird.

But compare Frank's condition here to 4th-place (under 200 lbs.) Chris Dickerson.  Zane was "ripped to the tits" and even had that printed on some t-shirts.  He really took conditioning to the next level.

People criticize Zane for being a swimmer and for not playing the size game.

And he is a 3X Mr. O who is still alive and healthy.

Truth.

I don't think I've seen a successful pro whom people are more jealous of than Frank Zane.

Ha ha, how do you figure he was not in that good of shape? Did you think abdomen was full vacuum all the time?

Did Zane get ahold of some of that Palm Springs life extension GH?

Zane was awesome

he was the smart but not crazy (also not bi polar drug addict?) contemporary to Mentzer

Second video was in 1983

same year that Bob Paris and Jeff King were the top "amateur" guys

and Samir won the Olympia

In '79, they were going to start filming Conan with Raquel Welch and Sean Connery in the movie. Arnold grew his hair long that year in preparation for the movie
but then it was delayed until 1981.

Plenty of Robby in this . . . Starts at 2:55

No doubt, and he may have been the best man on that day, but in some of those shots his back appears shallow and weak

Robby was way off in '79. He lost weight and competed in the Under 200 pound class and didn't have his usual mass and thickness.

They were giving Robby the shaft back then, for looking like Shaft. They told him to shut his mouth. Even when he was the main inspiration for Weider's bust.
