Milwaukee Sheriff and Trump Supporter Clarke Resigns

Thursday, 31 Aug 2017

Outspoken Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, who built a following among conservatives nationally with his provocative social media presence and strong support of Donald Trump, resigned on Thursday.

Clarke may join President Trump’s administration, according to one report. Politico reported that Clarke is expected to join the Trump administration in a position that is not Senate-confirmed. The former sheriff told Politico that he would “talk about my future plans next week."

Clarke submitted his resignation in a one-sentence letter to the county clerk that gave no reason for his departure more than a year before his term is up. In a brief statement a couple of hours later, Clarke also didn't explain.

"After almost forty years serving the great people of Milwaukee County, I have chosen to retire to pursue other opportunities," the statement said. "I will have news about my next steps in the very near future."

Clarke's most recent Twitter post from Thursday afternoon showed him posing with law enforcement officers at the National Fraternal Order of Police convention in Nashville.

Clarke's many liberal foes welcomed his departure.

Voces de la Frontera, an advocacy group for immigrants and low-wage workers, had sharply criticized Clarke for seeking authority for his deputies to perform the functions of immigration agents. The group called his departure "a victory for the people of Milwaukee County and the state of Wisconsin" and claimed credit for driving him out of office.

"After years of abuse at his hands, the people of Milwaukee can sleep soundly tonight," state Sen. Lena Taylor, a Democrat from Milwaukee and a frequent Clarke critic, said in a statement.

The tough-talking, cowboy hat-wearing firebrand made himself a darling of the political right through his brash social media presence, his staunch support for Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration and his support for patrolling Muslim neighborhoods.

Some Wisconsin conservatives had encouraged Clarke in recent months to challenge U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, but he repeatedly rejected their overtures.

Clarke announced in May that he had taken a job at the Department of Homeland Security, but the agency never confirmed it. He later said he withdrew his name. He recently published a memoir, "Cop Under Fire."

Clarke was one of the few African-Americans to speak at the Republican National Convention last year. He has been vocal about gun rights and critical of what he called the "hateful ideology" of the Black Lives Matters movement, saying at times, "Stop trying to fix the police. Fix the ghetto."

Clark has been sheriff of Milwaukee County since 2002 and spent more than two decades before that with the city's police department.

A lengthy inquest into the dehydration death of a Milwaukee County Jail inmate earlier this year raised troubling questions about how Clarke managed the jail — just as the White House was said to be considering him. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office is considering charges in the case, but not against Clarke, because prosecutors said he wasn't directly involved in the events that led to the inmate's death.

Clarke, a frequent Fox News guest, earned more than $105,000 last year in speaking fees — almost as much as his sheriff's salary — at more than three dozen events across the country.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker would be responsible for appointing someone to serve the remainder of Clarke's term, which runs through 2018. Walker's spokesman Tom Evenson said once he receives official notification of his resignation, the process of finding a replacement will begin.

Evenson did not immediately respond to an email seeking reaction from the governor to Clarke's decision to resign.

IDK much about this Clarke guy, but if he's worth half a damn then I doubt he'd want to gamble with Trump.

Seriously, man.  Can you imagine working for him?  No way.  It would be impossible to drive anything into his head, he's completely insincere 100% of the time, can't trust a word he says, and on and on.

99.9% sure he's NOT taking a position in Gov't.  Speculating it will be in the media - like FOX news or radio.  He will be sharing his plans after the Labor Day weekend.

August 31

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke, one of the most important conservative voices on law
enforcement and social issues in America and a lightning rod for criticism by Milwaukee liberals, is
retiring effective this afternoon.   Clarke months ago said he would be leaving for a position in the
Trump Administration but that never actually materialized and Clarke never did resign.  But this time it’s
for real and today is his last day.
Clarke tells me he is accepting a new position which will be announced next week.  He’s not disclosing
what it is but I can tell you that it is not in government and will give Clarke the latitude to continue to
speak out on the causes he is passionate about.
Clarke was initially appointed by Governor Scott McCallum in 2001 and was repeatedly reelected by
Milwaukee County voters despite the fact that he was a conservative running in a Democratic primary
and had the rabid opposition of the media and Democrat leaders.   He has emerged as one of the most
forceful defenders of law enforcement officers in the country.   His conservative views on social policy
and refusal to back down to media critics who hated his populist message made him a national hero to
millions of American conservatives.   I have long contended the animosity directed toward Sheriff Clarke
was bigoted at its core in that Clarke’s critics couldn’t abide an outspoken African-American leader.
Governor Scott Walker will name Clarke’s replacement.   The next election for sheriff is next year.

I love this story from a few years ago.  ;D

One woman learned a big lesson the hard way Thursday: never give your fellow driver the finger, especially when that driver is the most powerful member of the sheriff's department - and you are driving with a suspended license! Cheryl Smith was arrested Thursday and cited for driving with a suspended license, and also got a $393 ticket for reckless driving, after she flipped off Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke near 9th and State.

Now, Smith is speaking out, and admitting that sometimes, she can get a little hot-headed behind the wheel.

Smith says it was a look from a fellow driver on I-43 southbound Thursday that provoked her to make a gesture she now regrets. "I jumped from behind him, to the first lane, to the middle lane, and that's when I happened to look over. He had his window down, and he was giving me the 'are you serious?' look. I flipped him off, just so he could see it, and then I put it back, and started driving," Smith said.

It wasn't until Smith saw the flashing lights that she realized the vehicle was an unmarked squad car, and the person she flipped off: Sheriff Clarke! "I even uttered to myself, 'is she giving me the finger?' I mean, she held it up that long, that I could make sure," Sheriff Clarke said.

"He pulled his vehicle in front, and got out, and that's when I was like, I flipped off the police. It's David Clarke I flipped off," Smith said.

"The thing that bothers me is, your average motorist has to put up with that nonsense all the time, from these idiot drivers, and I think she learned a valuable lesson," Sheriff Clarke said.

"I learned a lesson. You never know who is in those tinted-window cars. Never assume it's just a normal person," Smith said.

Smith's license was suspended due to speeding tickets, and she says she knew she shouldn't have been driving, but was running late for class at MATC and the bus wasn't there on time. Smith says she plans to fight th reckless driving citation, and feels it should have been a less expensive speeding ticket instead. Sheriff Clarke predicts she won't fare well in that fight.
