My dad is on Cumadin, for artificial heart valve. Has to have monthly blood draw to check inr levels. Has dietary restrictions on foods with vitamin K (green leafy veggies). I don't think Xarelto requires all of that based on the tv commercials I have seen.

Does he want you on Coumadin? That would be for stroke risk but what about antiarrhythmic meds? Also have you explored catheter ablation?  They can map your heart and find the area causing it as long as valves have been ruled out.

Did you notice any symptoms from A fib or it was just revealed from an EKG?

I have had A-fib for over 10 years. about 4 episodes a year. I take flecadine twice a day for about two years. today I went in to see my cardiologist for the first time in two years, and he was not happy. he basically said listen pal, you have generic high blood pressure, your pre diabetic,
your 270, you eat red meat, you have A-FIB and other heart rate irregularities, WHY AREN'T YOU ON BLOOD THINNERS???????

I said listen pal, I'm in the best shape of my life at age 60. lifting, treadmill, walking in the park, walking at the beach, ect.

he said it didn't matter, if the blood starts to pool in a chamber of the heart, not good.

so looks like I will be starting XARELTO 20 MGS ONCE A DAY FOR LIFE. (87.50 for three months supply) fml

Looks like all that lifting and cardio is not doing much.

I guess you have no choice.

Be well.

Sounds like maybe up cardio in relation to lifting and drop some body weight. If thinners aren't that bad for sides I guess not a big deal. Better than croaking bud.

Flecinade is dangerous stuff. Go to an electrophysiologist and get ablation. Losing weight and of diet will do nothing. Also over the Alivecor app for your iPhone it will tell you if you are in A-fib and record it for your dr.

Losing weight will do nothing? Going from 270 to 200 will do a lot to lower risk.

I just have weekly blood donations when I go above 7 grams a week.

I eat all organic beef and chicken to compensate for the drugs.

Blood thinners are a standard precaution for anyone with A-fib.  If you only have 4 episodes a year, cardiac ablation is probably not worth the risk, but that's a discussion to have with your cardiologist.

I'm kinda surprised they dont have you on cardizem or some other CCB.  Do you take any medications for your blood pressure?

Really? What risk is that? He's talking A-Fib specifically and losing weight will NOT help.

I know 3 people that have had successful ablation. Two for SVT and one with A-Fib. The ONLY way to know if there is any chance to fix it is to have a Electro study done.

Could you run three miles without having a cardiac event?  I doubt it.

yes I take two blood pressure meds, and have taken them for years. when I have a A-Fib bout, I take 300 mgs of flecadine, and I always convert in about 6 hours or so. my doctor thinks that 4 times a year is no big deal, as A-FIB is not life threatening.
he's more worried about stroke factor. there is a test called the CHAD test, 1-10. smoking, drinking, over 75, ect, that anyone of his patients that have at least 2 points, he immediately puts them on blood thinners for life.

I was at 2 points, high blood pressure, and diabetic. (I take METFORMIN DAILY). I dont think I'm a diabetic, but I guess if you take METRORMIN, your diabetic.

hopefully I will not have any side effects on XARELTO.

sorry for sounding like a whiny pussy, I just can't believe all the shit that has happened to me in the last 10 years.

(I CAN BENCH PRESS 315 FOR TEN REPS EASY FOR FUCKS SAKES)  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Is blood thinners same stuff as beta-blockers? I use metroprolol anyway for heartpressure and it works very well.

Absolutely, hundreds of successful cardiac ablations are performed each day.  That being said, there are risks associated with it--as with any invasive procedure--and the benefit it may pose to the OP may not outweigh the risks.  Like you say, the only way to know is further tests & discussions with his dr.
