I couldn't agree more - and unless some sort of objective check is put in place, MPD is bound to evolve into CBD and then into men's open bodybuilding. A lot of people talk about how bodybuilding today is not like it used to be, and that the ironage was better, and so on, but what exactly do people think bodybuilding would become? As competitors got bigger and - to a lesser extent - leaner, wouldn't it make sense that bodybuilding became what it did once Dorian started winning his Sandows?
Put maximum weight to height ratios in place for MPD, and we can see three distinct divisions in the IFBB. If a particular competitor is not satisfied with one division, he can always change divisions. And with that in mind, do you know who has been killing it lately in the Classic Bodybuilding Division? None other than a 49-year-old Darrem Charles!
Darrem has scored an astounding six CBD wins in just over a year of the existence of the division! He currently ranks 13th in the world, and may well be top 10 in the world in the division soon, but given that Darrem is turning 50 next year, that's pretty incredible. During his IFBB pro career as a bodybuilder [when there was only one class], he won eight pro shows, then a Master's show - the Atlantic City Pro in 2008, when he just turned 40.
So Darrem Charles may well be one of the best examples we have of bodybuilding longevity - the only other example that I can think of who may be better would be Robby Robinson, who is 70, and still in great shape. Darrem has literally been in top shape since 1989, when he won the IFBB World Amateur Championships at age 21. Talk about impressive longevity. Darrem decided to approach bodybuilding in an intelligent fashion, much like Shawn Ray, and as a result, he gets to see continual benefits from the lifestyle.
